I decided to begin to break one of my new TB horses, Penny, to saddle. I slipped into her stall, gave her a good grooming and clipped on the lead rope. I had worked on leading her a few times before, so she was used to being on a led on a lead rope. I walked her outside then into the indoor arena. I lunged her for a while to give her some exercise and to keep her fit. I pulled her up after 10 mins or son, after working her at all gaits. I then pulled out a light saddle blanket and allowed her to sniff at it. I then slid it over her back and let it sit there. She was unexpectantly ‘cool’ about it, barely flinching. I moved the saddle blanket further back and into the correct position, she remained calm. I was pleasantly surprised as I didn’t think she would take it so well. I continued to move the blanket around and then leave it in a new position, then after a while I removed it, gave her a pat and fed her a carrot. I was so proud. She was obviously going to turn into a sweet natured horse. I then walked her around a little longer on the lunge line, and then I turned her out into the filly paddock for the rest of the day.
