Susan swung gracefully into the dressage saddle and gathered the reins. Sorceress danced elegantly beneath her and Susan squeezed the reins firmly in her gloved hands. Sorceress was very energetic this frosty morning. Susan sat deeply in the saddle and squeezed the filly on. The sturdy Friesian took off in a spirited trot, tossing her head and tugging on the reins impatiently. Susan knew just how to handle her filly. She gave the filly a sharp bump with her outside leg and Sorceress, very confused, sprang into a light, canter. After a circle, Susan slowed her to a walk and began to warm her up. Asking for a bend, she was very pleased when the pretty Friesian curved lightly around her inside leg around some circles. After a few minutes, she squeezed lightly, pushing Sorceress into a trot. The pretty filly tucked her head closer to her chest and moved out in a gorgeous trot. Susan posted gently and touched the filly lightly with her legs. Sorceress gave a cheerful whinny and extended her trot, flowing over the ground. Susan patted the filly’s neck before gathering the reins again and sliding her outside leg back. She squeezed firmly and Sorceress moved into a springy, perky canter around the twenty meter circle. Her mane fluttered lightly about her and her hooves hit the ground lightly with every stride. Susan sponged the reins and the Friesian collected her canter. “Good girl!” She praised, patting the filly gently. Considering this a good warm up, Susan walked Sorceress on a loose rein up to the top of the arena. She pressed a button on the CD player and hit delay for 30 seconds. She stood at the top of the ring and as the rich tones of Avril Lavigne’s song ‘Tomorrow’ began to play. Sorceress sensed that this was going to be fun and perked up her stride as the trotted up centerline. Her movement was perfectly in rhythym with the music and the filly halted squarely at X. She seemed proud of herself as she broke into an extended canter on cue. She was a very talented Friesian with wonderful gaits. They rode through their test, performing some very pretty basic dressage movements. “I love you, Sorceress!” Susan exclaimed, rubbing her gloved hand along the Friesian’s silky black neck. She and the filly rode outside and headed down a trail. Sorceress tossed her head elegantly and jogged down the trail. Susan sat perfectly to the spirited filly’s antics. They looped back to the barn after a few minutes. Susan smiled brightly and dismounted outside the barn door. She took care of Sorceress and then headed to the barn office.
