I slipped into her stall and clipped her leadrope on. I led her to the schooling ring for her next lesson. I clipped on a lunge line and using a lunge whip, formed a triangle in which she moved about me. I first worked her at a walk then trot and canter wanting to make sure she was warmed up before I began her training. I pulled her in and carelessly threw on the girth and saddle pad. When he took little notice, I decided I would start with the weight as well. With all of this gear on, I lunged her first clockwise, then anti-clockwise. She worked quite well so I pulled her up, took off the weight and once again out on the light saddle. Surprisingly she had little fear. Even though I had worked her with it before, I was still expecting a little resistance. I lunged her again and again. I decide to let her feel the stirrup irons on her side while she was standing still. I pulled her up, let her smell the leathers and the irons, then attached them. It was not the weight that startled her, but the presence of things that moved when she did. She was fine when standing still but when she shuffled her feet on the spot, the irons swung slightly and bumped her side. She took several steps to the side, but after some comforting words, she stood still and calm. I took them off again and lunged her again. I then added some more weight to the saddle, but that would not move when she did, so that she would be used to weight on her back. I lunged her for about 15 mins, then I pulled her in, took off her gear, walked her for a few more mins, to cool her off then turned her out until the sun set.
