Susan walked out to the barn and opened the door of Kent’s stall. The sweet 2 y/o colt poked his head out and whickered eagerly, stamping his foot. He had recently been broken to tack and was now ready to have a rider. Susan smiled brightly at the elegant bay and rubbed his coat affectionately. “Alright, sweetie, time for a big step.” She said. She hooked him in crossties and began to brush his magnificent, gleaming coat. She and Kent had always had a special bond and she hoped that would help them work as a good pair when she mounted him today. She laid the dressage saddle on his back and smiled proudly as the colt stood perfectly still. After tightening the girth, she grabbed her helmet and strapped it on carefully. She lifted the bridle off the rack and coaxed Kent to accept the bit. He seemed raring to go as she led him to the arena and hooked a lunge line to his bridle. He set off in a smooth walk, tossing his sculpted head energetically. He seemed eager to get moving, a little bit high strung today, Susan thought nervously. As if understanding her thoughts, Kent settled into a more relaxed gait. Soon, he had gone through all his gaits, both directions. She led him to the round pen and started the process, leaning slowly on his back. She had mounted him before and walked him on a lunge line. Now, she was going to walk him without the lunge line and see how he did. She squeezed gently with her legs and held a very light contact. Kent arched his neck and set out in a smooth, prancy trot. Susan squeezed the reins and he dropped back to a spirited walk. She walked him in a circle around the pen and he stayed fairly relaxed. After a few minutes, she carefully dismounted and led him to the barn, pleased.
