I groomed then led my feisty TB colt to the schooling ring for another breaking lesson. I was happy with how fast he was moving along, and decided if he worked as well as he had last time, I would put a saddle on his back today. I first lunged him in all gaits to get him warmed up and a little move calmed down. I then put on the girth around his belly and made him move in all gaits while wearing this. He didn’t take much notice so I brought him in and tightened it to a regular tightness. I then lunged him again. It only took him a few strides to get used to it again. After another 5 mins or so, I put on the light weight I had worked him with last time. Once again, he didn’t react badly as he had done it all before. I lunged him in all gaits until I felt he was ready for the weight of a light saddle. I took off the saddles, stirrup lengths and irons so there would be nothing to tap his back while he moved. I then gently placed it on his back and allowed him to adjust. He shuddered at first and tried to ‘get away’ from it. After a few mins, he had calmed down so I shuffled it around a little so he would get used to it being placed all over his back. Once again he shuddered but did not try to move away from it as he had the first time. I praised him when he stood still and calmly and then I decided to lunge him with it on his back. Once he realised it wasn’t going to hurt him and wasn’t too much different than the weight.. he relaxed.. and returned to his normal strides. I then brought him in took the saddle off and repetitively placed a saddle pad roughly on and off his back, carelessly and roughly.. to test his reaction and make sure he would not freak out in the future, if a child for example saddled him roughly and carelessly. I then cooled him down on the lunge line and turned him out for the afternoon.
