I gave my TB stallion a groom and led him to the saddling area, where I tacked him up. I mounted and walked him through the stableyeard of Castlereagh stables to the second outdoor arena. I had set up 4 jumps and was planning to school him over them. I warmed him up by doing circles of the arena at all gaits and then headed him towards the 3’ jump as a warm up. He soared over this, clearing it by a foot! Then I began to work him. I had raised the height of all the jumps to between 4’ and 4’9”. I jumped him over the 4’er a few times until I was happy with his taking off. I had the jumps spaced out so he (and I) would have to time our strides well so we did not jump too early or too late. The first time we were forced to take off too early, due to his strides so I brought him round and tried it again, making sure we did it right. Sure enough this time, he took off and landed perfectly. I was a little worried about is landings on the 4’9”er as he seemed to be landing a little ‘hard’. I worked him over this one again and again, until he was able to land smoothly (well as smooth as you can from that height!) and without a sudden thud. I slowed him down to a trot and kept him at that pace until James, my bf, had finished setting up a full showjumping course in the next arena. I trotted him to the next arena and then warmed him up a little more at a canter. I then started my timer and took him around the course. The jumps were all of between 3’9” to 4’9” and Memento took them all with no problem. The time was a few seconds too slow (which doesn’t seem much, but in competition it makes all the difference) but I was still happy with his effort. I praised him, gave him a carrot, unsaddled him, hosed him down and turned him out for the afternoon.
