I groomed my TB colt and tacked him up in a saddle (without stirrup irons and leathers) and girth and led him to the schooling ring. I lunged him as a warm up and then worked him at all gaits. I then halted him, attached the stirrup irons and leathers again and walked him around the ring. Once he had again grown used to them, I allowed him to trot and work as he normally would. at first, he would speed up each time one of the irons hit his belly, but after a few circles, he understood what was happening and worked as normal. I then took off the stirrups and leathers and brought in Alice, my friend who is a young jockey. She walked over to his side, and once he had smelt her, she leaned on the saddle. He stepped to the side, away from her, we gave him some encouragement and she tried again. Once he realised it was just weight, he stood still and let her put her weight on the side of the saddle. After a few tries, she was lying over the saddle with her belly on the saddle’s seat. Legend still stood still, knowing she would not harm him. I praised him and Alice dismounted. I the lunged him again to cool him down and unsaddled him and turned him out for the rest of the day.
