Lana smiled, breathing in the winter smells. She laid the saddle pad on her dapple grey mare Sparkle back. She smoothed it out and laid down the saddle. She buckled the girth and the mare let out a whinny, like she always did when her girth was tightened. "Shh, Shh" She laid a reasurring hand on the mares neck while reaching for her bridle. Lana put the reins over her neck and Sparkle brought her head down. Lana slipped the bridle over her head and Sparkle took the bit willingly. She buckled it up and led the mare out of the barn. The sun had just risen and their was a clean, fresh feeling outside.Lana led her to the arena. Lana swung up into the saddle gracefully and tapped Sparkle into a walk. Lana smiled as the mare jerked her head forward trying to get the reins and sponged them softly. Sparkle tucked her head back up by her chest and Lana squeezed gently asking for a trot. Sparkle moved off into a spirited, smooth trot, and Lana sat deep in the saddle, heels down, back arched, in perfect position. Lana asked the mare do bend around her leg. Sparkle responded by making an almost perfect 20 meter circle at a trot. Then Lana nudged Sparkle softly and asked for a collected canter. Sparkle collected her canter and cantered softly up the side of the arena. Then Lana asked her to extend it and the filly lengthened her stride. She sat deeply and then manuevered her in a big, open circle. The mare arched her neck proudly and followed through with the circle. Then I sat even deeper and pulled back on the reins lightly. I slowed her to a walk and then cooled her out and rode up to the barn. :-)
