I fetched Memento from his stall and after grooming and saddling him I lead him to the outdoor ring where i had set up some ground poles in a row to work on his jump striding. After a warm-up I cantered him towards the poles and asked him to jump them as though they were higher and tried to encourage him to keep his strides even both before, between and after the 4 jumps. He did not stumble or shorten his stride at all so I dismounted and moved the poles so there was different spacing between. I then cantered him towards these and he paced himself nicely between he jumps so he would not take of too early or too late. On the last jump however he was forced to shorten his stride before take off so he could clear the jump easily. I then got my friend to arrange some 3-4 ft jumps around the ring while I quickyl worked on all his gates. Once th course was set up I cantered him towards it and, as he had done before with the poles, I could feel him judging the distance between his present position and the jump, just like I was. I paced him well and he took off at just the right moment and easily cleared the 3’er. His pacing was working well and thorughout the whole course including the 4’ers he took off at the precise time so he would have plenty of tiume to easliy clear the jump. Only once did he take off late, perhaps ¼ of a stride, and in this jump he tapped the bar of th oxer. After this intense workout I took himon a relaxing trail ride to cool him down and get him used to being outdoors with the possibility of animals jumping out etc. overall he performed greatly today ad aftre I hosed him down and unsaddled him, I fed him 2 carrotts as a reward before turning him out to graze.
