Susan walked out to the paddock and opened the gate. Sorceress cantered over and she whinnied shrilly. Susan smiled with pleasure and led the excited Friesian to the barn. She brushed off the filly’s glossy black coat and laid the saddle on her back. She tightened the girth and strapped on her helmet. She smiled with pleasure as Sorceress lowered her head and accepted the bit. She led the filly to the arena and started her on a circle on the lunge line. The Friesian had HUGE gliding gaits. Susan walked and trotted the filly before clucking softly and saying, “Canter.” Sorceress picked up a smooth medium canter, head tucked to her chest. “Collect.” Susan muttered. The filly shortened her stride and then as Susan said, “Extend” Sorceress stretched her legs out and cantered around. Susan lunged her the other way and then took her over ground poles on the lunge. “Good girl!” she praised, bringing the filly to the center of the ring. She let down her stirrups and called to Mike, who was walking out of the barn, “Wanna help me break her to rider?” He nodded and jogged over. He gripped Sorceress’s reins firmly as Susan began to lean her weight on the filly’s back. The Friesian sidestepped nervously but was fairly calm. Susan slowly eased all the way into the saddle and took the stirrups. Mike started walking Sorceress on the lunge line. The filly was nervously prancing around at walk. Susan kept her legs off and didn’t hold the reins. The Friesian settled down and soon she was being walked each way with a rider.
AFTER A MONTH…
Susan smiled with pleasure and swung into Sorceress’s saddle. The sweet filly had been doing remarkably well with a rider and was now ready for some cantering off the lunge line. She grinned and squeezed softly. The filly started off in a smooth walk, beginning to come round. Susan kept her contact firm and her legs pressed lightly on the filly’s sides. Sorceress was warmed up at walk and then moved into a smooth, trot at Susan’s signals. Her gliding, extended gait was perfectly smooth. Susan moved her through some soft, transitions and then said, “Alright, girl. This just like on the lunge line.” Sorceress snorted with concentration and came into a deeper frame. The elegant Friesian was bent perfectly, as Susan slid her outside leg back and squeezed. Sorceress jerked out of her frame and lifted her head up as she broke into a choppy canter. Susan held a steady contact and urged the filly forward with her seat and leg. Sorceress braced against her rider, tensing against the bit. Susan sponged the reins lightly and asked softly for bend. Sorceress cantered a little bit more relaxed and started to bend, coming into her usual frame. Susan kept her movements soft and quiet. After a minute, Sorceress was calm and relaxed as she cantered. Susan squeezed the reins softly and the Friesian dropped to a big, extended trot. Susan bent her and then slid her leg bck and squeezed. This time, Sorceress sprang into a light, swift canter that was fairly relaxed. “Good girl!” Susan praised, slowing the spirited filly down to a soft trot. She dismounted and led the lovely Friesian to the barn, very happy :-)
