I walked into the stable and led Crystal outside. I cross tied her and then gave her a good groom all over. I then saddled her and led her to the outdoor arena. I mounted and warmed her up, performing a few simple loops of the ring until she was ready to work. I began by working her on the straights of the ring, in first a collected walk, then on the opposite side, an extended walk. I performed a small circle at the end of about 10, and repeated what I had just done, but in a counter clockwise direction. I had to use quite a bit of leg to keep her at he extended walk, but her collected walk was beautiful. I spent the next 5 mins or so working on her transitions between walk and trot and once I was satisfied I kept her at a trot. We spent the next 10 mins working on both her extended and collected trot once again trying to keep the same rhythm despite the length of her steps. I then worked on her half halts for a while as well. Next came the canter. Her transitions between a trot and canter were already almost perfect and graceful, so I tried to work on her transition from walk to canter. At first they were a little jumpy and ‘rough’ but after a few tries, she got her balance together and it became a lot more polished. I worked o her flying changes and even tried to get her to change her leading leg at every stride. After a short walking dressage test, to cool her down a little but still keep her alert, I decided to work her on her leg yielding. It took a lot of time, but she was finally beginning to not need as much leg as before and walk sideways almost willingly without any leg pressure. It is obvious to all watching us ride, that we have really began to build a special bond between us. She no longer tries to bite the bit and resist my instructions but now easily does as I command, needing very little encouragement or use of aids. Before I put her in the paddock, I performed a dressage test with her to see how she goes. She went perfectly with very little mistakes. After a relaxing walk around, she had cooled down and I unsaddled her, fed her a carrot and turned her out.
