The day before i had brought home my 2 new TB horses and decided to work with them both, Penny and Legend, today. I first headed towards legends stall carrying a soft dandy brush and some carrots. I stood at the stall door for a few mins, letting him adjust to my presence. I let him smell me and after a few mins more, I fed him a small carrot. I quietly slipped into the stall, making sure he knew what I was doing at all times. Next I held the brush towards him and let him sniff and investigate it. When I was confident that he wasn’t afraid, I gently stroked the brush over his back. I felt him all over with my hands and then gently worked him over with the brush. I then fed him another carrot. He was already wearing a halter, and so I fetched a lead rope. Still; in his stall, I let him sniff the lead rope and after another few mins, I clipped it to the bottom of his halter. I let in hang down, making sure he would not step on it, for a while and then I held it, getting him used to the pressure of a person on the other end, specifically me. After another 10 mins I unclipeed the lead rope, fed him another carrot, and gave him a pat all over. I then left his stall. I was aware that he had been worked a little in the basics before I bought him, but I had to start all over again with me this time, so he would become used to me instead.
Next I stood outside pennys stall and let her take in my scent. I repeated almost the exact same procedure I had done with legend, with penny so she too would become used to me. She was far more trusting than legend so after a shorter time I left the stall and put the equpitment away.
