Susan walked out to Cobalt’s paddock. The big Trakehner wheeled around and galloped over to her, tail flagged and neck arched. Susan rubbed his gleaming coat affectionately as he halted in front on her. She clipped a lead shank onto his halter and led him to the barn. She brushed off his shiny black coat one time and then laid the jumping saddle on his back. He nipped at her playfully and she gave him a look. He whinnied and then nuzzled her. She laughed and slipped the bit into his mouth. He chewed the bit eagerly as she led him to the jumping arena. She swung into the saddle and squeezed firmly. He walked forward smoothly, tossing his head with impatience. Susan held a light contact and the stallion came nicely on the bit, moving off her leg energetically. She praticed circles and serpentines at the walk each direction before sitting deep and nudging Cobalt into a trot. She sat a few beats, organizing him, before posting lightly and practicing 10 meter circles. She sat his trot and started him on a twenty meter circle. He was bent nicely and was very relaxed. Susan smiled and slid her outside leg back. She squeezed and Cobalt cantered elegantly forward. “Good boy.” Susan praised as he moved nicely toward the first jump, a 2’6” upright. She shoved her heels down and kneaded he hands up his neck as he took off, tucking up his legs and stretching over it. As he landed, Susan settled back into the saddle and adjusted his stride for the wishing well. He soared over it and Susan pushed him toward the bounce. He arched his glossy neck and cantered swiftly over the oxer. Susan rode the stallion boldly through the rest of the course and then slowed him down to a walk. “Good boy.” She said, very pleased with him. He whickered eagerly and jerked at the reins. Susan laughed and squeezed firmly, pushing him toward the trails. The big Trakehner snorted and surged into a light trot. Susan sat deep and sponged the reins. He dropped reluctantly to a walk. She smiled and took him to the edge of the beach along the river. She gave rein and squeezed. He shot off in a swift gallop, his long legs carrying them across the sand. She let him go for a while and then slowed him down. Her brown hair was wind tousled and her eyes sparkling brightly. She threw her arms around Cobalt’s neck and sighed. The big stallion nuzzled her affectionetly and then they headed back to the barn, content with their ride.
