Susan led Chance out of his stall and hooked him in crossties. The big TB snorted and danced in place, ready to go. Susan laid the dressage saddle on his back and tightened the girth. Chance accepted the bit easily and then pranced toward the arena beside Susan, trumpeting to the mares. Susan swung into the big colt’s saddle and gathered the reins. She squeezed and pushed him into the bridle as they walked. He came on the bit and relaxed, rounding his back and arching his neck as they walked smoothly forward. Chance chewed the bit and bent nicely as he was guided through circles and serpentines at the walk. Susan squeezed and the colt surged into a smooth, swift trot, head tucked to his chest. Pushing him around his circle energetically, Susan used her inside leg and rein to bend the horse perfectly. “Good boy!” Susan praised as he gave even more to the bridle. She sat deep and squeezed firmly with her outside leg. The colt picked up a smooth, relaxed right lead canter. Susan smiled. This was excellent, compared to the wild canters he used to pick up. She controlled it lightly and then headed up the long side of the ring. Susan slowed Chance to a trot and after 3 strides asked for a left lead canter. He picked it up smoothly. A few seconds later, Susan slowed him to a trot and after two strides of trot; he picked up a right lead canter. Chance was improving fast! She pulled him gently back to a trot and after one trot stride; he smoothly picked up a left lead canter. She took a circle and then took a deep breath. Now, he was ready for flying lead changes! Chance moved smoothly up the long side, eagerly awaiting her next signal. She sat deep and pushed with her outside leg, holding firm contact. He arched his neck and thrust his right foreleg forward. “Good boy!” Susan praised lavishly. She tried it a few more times and then took the colt to the barn.
