Susan walked through the barn and grinned. She slid open Kentucky Flame’s stall door and smiled. The cute bay colt was almost a year old and was being a perfect gentleman about his training. She hooked him in crossties and brushed his glossy brown coat. He stood calmly, whickering to her. “Good boy.” She praised as he lifted each of his feet without a fuss. Kent tossed his cute head as she led him out to the arena. Susan hooked the lunge line to his halter and started him on a circle around her. He eagerly cantered forward and she slowed him to a walk. After 5 minutes, she clucked softly and Kent moved into a trot. He tucked his head to his chest and held his tail high as he pranced around. Susan smiled and said, “Canter.” The TB/QH colt tossed his head and cantered perkily forward. She lunged him the other direction at all three gaits, very pleased with his movement and responsiveness. His gaits were just like his sister’s, steady and smooth. Susan led Kent to the barn and gave him a quick grooming before grabbing a yellow & green lead rope. She clipped it to Kent’s halter and led him to the paddocks. She turned him out in his paddock and smiled and he galloped strongly around. She went back into the barn and took Beauty out of her stall. The pretty sorrel mare whinnied and her black filly, South Carolina Courage, trotted out behind her. Carol was ready to be halter broken today. Susan led Beauty out to the paddock and Carol followed eagerly. After shutting the gate, she slipped the halter over Carol’s head, buckling it quickly. The spirited filly tossed her head and galloped around. When she had settled down and been grazing for a while, Susan walked over and slipped the halter off before walking back to the barn. She slid open Seaing Silver’s stall door and smiled. Sea’s soft black coat was gleaming in the pale morning sunshine. The 10 month old colt was sweet and loving. Susan brushed the colt’s shining coat and smiled proudly as he stood calmly. After a thorough grooming, Susan led Sea out to the trailer. He snorted warily but followed her up to the ramp. As she began to move up it, he threw his head and dug his hooves into the dirt. “C’mon, boy.” She said soothingly. His ears pricked toward her and she held out a carrot. He whinnied and moved cautiously up the ramp to her. “Good boy.” She praised. She led him up and down a few more times, praising him. She turned him out in his paddock and smiled with pleasure. She walked over to one paddock, where three Friesians were standing. Midnight was grazing peacefully, while her twin daughters, Sorceress and Temptress, were running. Susan whistled sharply and the three Friesians galloped over. She led Sorceress to the barn and groomed her glossy black coat. After picking her feet, Susan walked into the tack room and got the all purpose saddle she had been using with the 2 y/o filly. She grabbed the bridle and headed out to Socrceress. Susan laid the saddle on the Sorceress’s back and slowly tightened the girth. She bridled the perky filly and led her to the arena. After clipping the lunge line to the filly, Susan clucked softly and let Sorceress trot forward smoothly. The filly broke into a canter occasionally but stayed relaxed and calm. Soon, Sorceress was responding well on each direction on the lunge line with tack. “Good girl.” Susan praised before putting the large Friesian out in the paddock. She smiled with pleasure and walked into the barn to get Perfect Sunrise. The sassy Arab filly tossed her mane pertly as Susan hooked her in crossties. The cute weanling snorted impatiently as her glossy bay coat was groomed to perfection. “Good girl!” Susan said. The adorable Arabian was a fast learner but was often impatient. Not wanting to do to much so soon after buying the filly, she put put the Arab in her stall, feeding her a sugar cube. Honor of the Shamrock whinnied eagerly and cantered around the paddock. The sweet Hanoverian colt was one of the cutest she had ever trained. “Hey, precious.” She cooed, patting his glossy bay coat. Sham trotted alongside her and then slowed down as they neared the barn. Susan smiled and tied him with a quick release knot. He snorted, but stood still. She brushed off his coat and then picked up the hose. She sprayed the ground around his legs with the spray on low. He whickered nervously and when some of it hit his legs, he reared and pulled backwards frantically. Seeing that he was going to get hurt, Susan jerked on the release rope and it slipped loose. Sham reared and galloped away. Susan sighed and walked slowly after him. He glanced at her nervously and tossed his head. “Shhh, calm down.” she said sweetly. He walked slowly to her and then stood, looking scared. She smiled and put him in a stall. Despite the fact that Sham was a weanling, she put him in with Delilah. He trembled but cuddled up to the motherly Morgan. Susan knew that he was too nervous to learn anything today, so she went to the house.
