The excitable 3 y/o bay TB colt raced around on the lunge line.the ex-racehorse loved being able to run free, but I didn't think he would everunderstand that when you canter on the lunge line, you don't go at a mad rush.Rush Hour had hurt himself on the track when he was still co-owned by Mal & I.I took him into training, & had been woking with him ever since.Only a few weeks ago, Mal had sold him & the other racehorse we co-owned, Sugar N' Spice to me.I slowed Rush Hour to a trot, then a walk & finally a halt.I unclipped the lunge line from his bridle & led the bay colt over to the mounting block.Rush Hour was showing potential as a hunter/jumper & maybe as a dressage horse.I wasn't sure about doing dressage with Rush Hour because he was just to fast & crazy for it.Not to mention he hated those small dressage arena's.I mounted Rush Hour and released some of my grip on the reins, Rush Hour walked right off @ a quick pace, I instantly went back to my death-grip on the reins & waited for him to start bucking.Rush Hour jigged sideways, & then suddenly started bucking & twisting sideways.I sat back, keeping a death grip on the reins & sitting back. Finally, Rush Hour settled down & walked on.Then he saw a lunge whip in the middle of the arena! Rush Hour lurched forward & reared.I leaned as far foward as possible, careful not to tug on the reins or Rush might fall over backwards.Rush Hour came back down, & took off.Luckily, I still had a good grip on the reins & stopped him from plowing forward."Someone!" I yelled."PLEASE pick up the lunge whip in the indoor arena or I'm going to be trampled to death!" Arianna came un & came into the arena. She slowed down to a walk & grabbed the lunge line, then she ran back & put the lunge line away."Thank you Ari!" I called."No problem!" Arianna replied.I got Rush to walk & walked him around a few laps before squeezing him into a trot.I sponged on the reins & did half-halts to keep Rush Hour @ a controlled trot. Then I started posting. After a bit of that, I cued Rush to canter. He sprang into a smooth, quick canter.I did some more half-halts & got him back to a controlled canter.I did some large canter circles, & then a did a few 20 meter ones.I made sure that I didn't lean in, & I picked up my inside rein.Rush Hour ended up doing a balanced canter circle.Rush Hour wasn't used to make circles like that, so he was rather un-balanced when he did them.I slowed Rush Hour to a trot, & then a walk.I dismounted, & put down a couple of groundpoles in a line.I got back on Rush and walked him over to the ground poles.I let him sniff them & then walked him over one.Rush Hour made a un-gainly hop over the ground poles & snorted.I walked him over the groundpoles again, & this time, he walked over them. Then I did a controlled trot with him, & trotted over the groundpoles. This time, Rush extended his pace & pciked up his feet & legs when I trotted him over the groundpoles.I trotted Rush over the groundpoles a few more times in each direction & then walked him out.I dismounted & led the 16.2 hand Thoroughbred back to his stall, where I untacked him. Then I hosed him off & turned him out in his paddock.Rush Hour raced around his paddock, enjoying himself.I sighed, it was really a shame that he couldn't race anymore. If he hadn't hurt his leg, he might have had a chance in the triple crown races.I walked back up to the stable & brought my tack to the tack room, then I used leather cleaner on my tack, & put it away.
