Susan swung into the jumping saddle and gathered the reins. Delilah shifted beneath he and eagerly chewed the bit. Susan squeezed and pushed the mare forward in a smooth walk. Delilah stepped out and accepted the contact easily. Susan walked her once each direction before asking for a trot. The mare moved perfectly forward, steady and relaxed. Susan suppled her each direction and then squeezed her outside leg. The mare cantered swiftly forward, alert and on the bit. After some canter work both directions, Susan walked the mare out to the jumping field. They cantered a courtesy circle and headed for the first jump. Delilah tucked up her legs and soared over the 3’3” coop energetically. Susan pushed her heels down and urged her mare over the next jump, a 3’6” spread. Delilah bounced easily through the course and slowed when Susan squeezed the reins. “That was awesome!” Susan said, patting Delilah’s withers happily. They took the course again before they dismounted and headed to the barn.
THE NEXT DAY…
Susan vaulted into the saddle and patted Delilah’s withers. She settled into the all purpose saddle and squeezed her legs gently. Delilah walked easily forward. After an intense warm up, Susan exaggerated her posting and pushed Delilah into an extended trot. The mare flung out her legs and looked beautiful. Susan squeezed and the mare launched into an extended canter, smooth and elegant. After 15 minutes of extensions, Susan collected the mare’s trot and sat lightly in the saddle. They did a 3 loop serpentine and then a square serpentine at this collected pace. Then Susan nudged and the talented mare cantered collectedly on a circle. They practiced flying lead changes and then ran through a first level test. They performed flawless transitions, 10, and 20 meter circles! Susan grinned excitedly and guided Delilah over to the trail. They walked down in a free walk, relaxed and smooth. Then they arrived at the XC course. Susan surveyed it before cantering a courtesy circle and urging Delilah for the first 3'9” bullfinch. The mare tucked up her legs and soared over it regally. They took the hanging log, ditch, ski jump, staircase, fallen log, and tigar trap in similar style. They bounced over post and rail fence before hand galloping back to the start. Susan slowed Delilah to a walk and patted the mare praisingly. They headed back to the barn, pleased with their work.
