Susan flipped open her photo album and smiled wistfully at a picture of Chance galloping down the track. He had had so much potential as a flat racer but his injury had ended that part of his life. She slammed the book shut and walked out to his stall. His leg was ready to be ridden on, but training would start slow. She was hoping to turn him into a hunter and dressage horse. He would be able to do small jumping, up to 3’ probably, but absolutely no higher. She smiled and led him out of his stall. She had been lunging him and he was ready for a ride. She led Chance into the barn aisle and hooked him in crossties. After grooming his glossy coat until it shone, Susan tacked him up. She led him out to the ring and lunged him both ways at walk. Then she swung into the saddle and started him around the ring. He snorted and pranced about, full of himself after his long injury. Susan settled him down and kept him to a calm walk. He snorted but seemed to be enjoying the ride. Soon he broke into a steady trot and tossed his head when Susan slowed him down to a walk. After 30 minutes of walking, Susan squeezed and let Chance trot around the ring twice. He was smooth and strong, not favoring his foreleg at all. Susan slowed him to a walk and dismounted. He had seemed ready to do more work but she didn’t want to push him too hard, just ease him back into training. Susan led him to the barn and gave him a thorough grooming. He snorted happily as he ate his treat and was turned out in his paddock.
AFTER TWO WEEKS OF DAILY WORKOUTS LIKE THAT…
Susan swung into Chance’s saddle and grinned. She was going to begin the colt’s dressage training today! She squeezed gently and noted how sensitive the highly bred TB was. He walked lightly forward, smooth and swift. She sponged the reins and sat deep in the saddle with light contact and firm seat and legs. After once around the ring like this, he rounded his back and arched his neck slightly. “Good boy.” Susan cooed as he relaxed more and more. They made a gentle transition into trot and he kept his poll down and his back rounded. Susan grinned. He was a natural! He tossed his head and hollowed his back as she lost concentration, flying into a canter. Susan squeezed on and off with the reins until he trotted and then she reastablished their relaxed gait. After trotting for a few more minutes, she cantered him once each way and took him to the barn :)
