THE SPIRIT OF FIRE
Helen walked out of the barn and looked around. She saw her TB stallion prancing about in his paddock. He was looking wonderful. Helen sighed happily. Fire had injured himself on a trail ride and had not been ridden b/c of it! Now he was recovered and ready to work again, though he would never race again. He had been the fastest race horse Helen had ever owned. She turned around and went back into the barn. She Walked into the tack room, scooped up an all purpose saddle and bridle and Fire’s tack box. She set them out next to a pair of crossties and picked up a lead rope. She walked out to the paddock where Fire was showing off to the mares in the next field. She unlatched the gait of the pasture and stepped inside. She whistled sharply. Fire wheeled around and dashed over to Helen. She smiled and kissed his soft muzzle, then led him back to the barn. He danced about as she clipped him into crossties. She groomed his flawless chestnut coat and combed his mane and tail. Then she swung he saddle onto his back. He shifted and looked around warily at the saddle. He was startled at the feel of the larger saddle, since he was used to a racing saddle. She attached the girth and began to tighten it. He nipped her elbow and tossed his head, but relaxed when she finished. As she scooped up the bridle her son Jacob walked into the barn and spotted her. “He ready to work?” He said in surprise. “Yep!” Helen replied “I’m going to start retraining him for Dressage, Hunter and jumping maybe up to about 3’ 3‘6” She said slipping the Bridle over Fire’s head. “Cool!” Jacob said. She smiled at her son, strapped on her helmet and led Fire out to the ring. She adjusted the stirrups and swung lightly into the saddle. The energetic stallion pranced and danced about beneath her, full of himself after his long rest from work. She asked him to walk and he flung out in a speedy trot. She settled him back to a walk and continued around the ring. She walked him around the ring a few times each direction. He was supple and forward though of course not in a dressage form. She asked gently for a trot and Fire exploded into a speedy helter skelter canter. She settled him back down to an easy trot and continued around the ring. She let him trot around the ring a few times the brought him back to a walk. She walked a few 20 meter circles and then went back to trot. She got Fire going steady at trot then asked gently for canter. Fire made a smooth transition to canter. Helen cantered a 20 meter circle and brought him back to trot. Helen slid off Fire’s back onto the ground. She patted his neck and led him back to the barn
AFTER 2 WEEKS OF A WORKOUT LIKE THAT EVERYDAY…
Helen swung up into the saddle. She smiled and Fire moved forward, he was calm and relaxed. Helen warmed him up and then began the colt’s dressage training. She sat in the saddle, back straight, seat deep, legs firm and maintaining a firm contact, sitting gently to his smooth trot. After 2 times around the arena like this, Fire rounded his back and trotted forward into the contact. Helen smiled, he was going to be a really good English horse. The highly bred TB stallion was , sensitive and light as they trotted around the ring. Helen worked on steady energy, bend and roundness for about 45 minutes. By the end of the session Fire was keeping up a steady trot forward into the bridle and nicely round, but he positively refused to bend. Helen would have to work on that as well as the basics of dressage. She dismounted and led him to the barn.
