Susan swung into the saddle and gathered the reins. She squeezed and Magic walked smoothly forward, neck arched and back rounded. Today, they were going to work on their third level movements for the show. After a very thorough warm up, Susan began to guide Magic through some more complicated figures. She squeezed her reins and squeezed while holdin very firm contact. He cantered with his slender front legs and spun in a circle on his hind, performing a perfect canter pirouette. His muscles churned as she urged him forward in an extended trot. She pushed him across the arena, MXK, in an elegant half pass right. Magic was round and relaxed as she pushed him into a left lead canter and bent him to the left as he cantered a 15 meter circle to the right. The big stallion was moving smoothly through these movements. Susan laughed remembering times when counter canter had not come so easy for him. She counter cantered him on a left circle and then slowed him to a trot. She urged him into an extended trot and pushed him through some square serpentines. Magic snorted as she halted him and then walked over to the CD player. She hit a button and took him through a third level test. He was smooth and relaxed through every movement. Susan patted his shoulder in excitement and then ran through their freestyle routine. She slowed her stallion to a halt and smiled happily.
THE NEXT DAY…
Susan walked out to Magic’s paddock and whistled. The big Friesian tossed his head and reared majestically before charging toward the paddock. He looked unreal as he slowed at the gate and nuzzled Susan. She led him to the barn and brushed his silky black coat. He tossed his mane as she tightened the girth to Magic’s jumping saddle. She strapped on her helmet and bridled her big Friesian. She led him out to the jumping arena and began to warm him up. He was on the bit as they walked and trotted around the arena. Then they cantered a courtesy circle and headed for the first jump in the 2’ course. Magic sprang over it and moved smoothly toward the second fence, an oxer. He bounced over the rest of the fences with such ease that Susan raised the course 3”. Magic bounded easily through it and Susan smiled. She took him on the trail behind her house and let Magic walk easily along it on a long rein. He was relaxed and comfortable. Susan cooled him out along the trail and then dismounted at the barn. She untacked the sweaty stallion and put him in his stall for the night.
