Susan smiled and opened Splash’s stall door. The paint colt tossed his black and white mane elegantly. Susan hooked the colt in crossties and began to curry his soft coat. After a thorough grooming, Susan saddled the colt and carefully tightened the girth. Splash stood calmly and snorted with impatience, ready to go. Susan strapped on her helmet and picked up Splash’s bridle. She slipped the bit easily into his mouth and buckled it, pleased with his willing, eager disposition. She led him out to the arena and lunged him on a twenty meter circle. He moved smoothly through a walk to the right, long strided and relaxed with his handler. He walked around a few times before breaking into an energetic trot. Susan grinned with pleasure. Splash had so much potential! The eager two year old was bright and had learned everything quickly. He loaded, tied, clipped, shoed, lunged, and behaved like a pro! She cantered him on his right lead. He picked it up quickly and tucked his head to his chest as he cantered. Susan lunged him the other direction through all three gaits and then slowed him down. She waved to Mike who was coming out of the barn and said, “Can you come hold him for me?” He nodded and grasped Splash’s reins firmly, patting the colt reassuringly. Susan stood on the mounting block and leaned ever so slightly on Splash’s back. He snorted in surprise but didn’t move too much. She slowly lowered into the saddle, adding more weight gradually. He pranced nervously beneath his rider and glanced back at her. After 10 minutes of her sitting quietly in the saddle, Splash was much more relaxed. Mike led them around at a walk and Splash kept his smooth strided, relaxed movement. Susan dismounted carefully and took the colt to the barn. The soft look in his brown eyes as she groomed him showed that he still loved and trusted her completely. She untacked him and put him in his stall. She opened Beauty’s stall door and looked at the rather large mare. The QH was known for having excellent foals. Her first filly, Belle, had recently been broken to a rider and her colt, Kent, was healthy and smart. Now she was in foal with what was supposed to be another filly. Susan patted and fed the mare, before walking up to the house to cook dinner.
