In reply to: Susan 's message, "Breaking Splash to a rider!" on 17:43:07 07/30/02 Tue

Splash snorted excitedly as Susan swung into his saddle. He was a gentle, eager student and was ready to begin some dressage basics. Susan rode him gently into the bridle, not wanting him to develop a hard mouth. Splash had been worked under saddle for a month now and was improving very fast. After a good warm up, Susan squeezed gently. Splash trotted flashily forward, smooth and attentive. Susan sat deep in the saddle to keep him relaxed and he became more relaxed. He rounded his back and lowered his poll, arching his neck slightly. Susan smiled proudly and began to post gently. She guided Splash through a 20 meter circle to the right. He responded to the light pressures of her reins and was a natural at the few dressage movements they had tried. Susan brought her right leg back and squeezed, bending the colt to the left as she did. He broke into a right lead canter and Susan sponged the reins. He attentively dropped back down to a trot and picked up the right lead at her firm signal. He cantered smoothly around the circle and dropped to a trot as she changed direction. She cantered him on his other lead, which he picked up corrrectly on their first try. Susan found that as they moved along, he came on the bit and rounder with every stride. After an hour of light dressage schooling, Susan slowed the colt to a walk and rode to the barn. She dismounted and held Splash’s reins. She looked at Jon who had just tacked up Montana. “Will you come on a quick trail ride with me? It’s Splash’s first one.” She asked. Jon nodded and swung into Montana’s western saddle. The horses glanced at each other before starting down the trail. Splash was tense but stayed calm as the squirrels skittered through trees and the leaves rustled. After 10 minutes, Susan and Jon rode back to the barn. Susan dismounted and untacked Splash in the barn. The colt stood calmly while she bathed him and then marched quietly into the paddock. She smiled proudly as he kicked up his heels and galloped around the paddock, neck arched and tail flagged.
