CAT BURGLER

Cat stuck her head out of her stall and nickered reproachfully as Helen walked past. Helen smiled and picked up a lead rope. She rubbed Cat’s muzzle and she clipped the lead rope onto her filly’s halter. She led the lanky thoroughbred filly out to the aisle and groomed her. After 5 minutes Cat’s black coat was shining silky, soft and shining like a black pearl. She tacked her up all-purpose and led her out to the arena. She was going to start the Filly’s jumping training. She attached the lunge line to Cat’s bridle and led her out to the middle of the ring. She lunged her both ways at walk, trot & canter until she was comfortable and relaxed, but still energetic. The lanky, athletic filly had swinging gaits and a long striding style that would get good marks when she showed. After 15 minutes Helen brought Cat to a halt and tied her to the rail of the arena. Then she set up a ground pole in the circle Cat had been trotting. She put Cat back on the circle and flicked the lunge whip at her heels. Cat moved into and energetic trot. When she came to the ground pole she looked at it warily and tried to balk. Helen flicked the whip and clucked firmly. Cat relaxed and stepped over it. Helen trotted Cat over it until she completely ignored it. Then Helen raised it to a 6” crossrail. Cat hopped over it with no trouble at all. Her ears were pricked forward and her eyes excited. After hopping over the 6” a few times. Helen raised it again so that it was 1’ tall. When Cat saw it she screeched a halt and stood looking shiftily at it. “C’mon” Helen said soothingly, starting Cat back on the circle. This time Cat popped over it perkily. After taking her over it a few more times at trot, Helen let her canter it 3 times. Cat apparently loved jumping and was doing wonderfully. She led her back into the barn and untacked her.
2 DAYS LATER…(after another workout like that on the day in between)
Helen walked into the barn and saw Jess finishing filling Flurry’s water bucket. “Do you want to help me with cat?” Helen asked, smiling at her daughter. “Of course” Jess said. She was amazed that her mom was letting her help with Cat. Her mom’s beloved Yearling? Whoa? Helen and Jess tacked Cat up and led her out to the ring. “OK Jess get up” Helen said. “I get to ride her” Jess asked her mouth hanging open. “Only on the lunge line” Helen said concealing an amused smile. Jess swung into the saddle and gathered up the reins. Helen lunged her and Cat both ways at walk, trot & canter to warm up. Then she set up the ground pole. Jess leaned gently forward in 2 point and Cat stepped over the ground pole. Cat was calm as they took the pole twice each direction. Helen raised it to a 6” and then a 1’ Jess simply sat on Cat’s back leaning forward and kneading her hands up the filly’s neck as they bounced over the crossrail. After 30 minutes of taking them each way Helen brought Cat back to a walk. “That was really good” Helen said, praising both horse and daughter. Mother and Daughter talked happily as they put cat away :-)!!
