It's hard to make a diagnosis without being there myself, but it sounds to me like you need a new CD-ROM. They're not that expensive ($35-50). I would also recommend against installing a Linux partition on a Windows machine. I did that last year and it was one big mess. You run into all kinds of problems. My advice is to get a cheap mainboard ($65 for a Socket 7 mainboard and $25 for an AMD K62-500 processor) and put a seperate Linux box together. Or just get an older computer from someone for a couple hundred dollars. You don't need megapower for a linux box.

Screw the bootloader and screw getting Linux drivers for each piece of hardware (been there, done that, won't do it again). Like my friend told me the other day, "Bootloaders are for fags." While I don't 100% agree with that statement, they are a pain in the ass.
