ACT III

Scene: Park [Ext.], Late Evening
The camera is focused on SPIKE as at ultra fast speeds he rotates around. He instinctively brings his arms up to cover his torso.

The cross-bolt embeds in SPIKE's palm.

SPIKE
[To DAWN]
Run!

The camera focuses on SARIA again. After grabbing her stake-axe weapon from behind, she rushes SPIKE. She tackles him to the ground and together they go tumbling across the ground.

DAWN is too frightened to move. She knows this face; it has haunted her in a nightmare.

SPIKE manages to pin SARIA to the ground by the throat.

SPIKE
[Shouting]
I said RUN!

DAWN runs.

SARIA loosens SPIKE's grip and pushes him back before kicking him backwards. SPIKE goes flying. This is one super-strong bitca.

DAWN prepares to raise the cross-bow that SARIA dropped a moment before. SARIA does a series of flips straight onto DAWN.

The cross-bow is kicked aside.

SARIA back hands DAWN who is knocked back into the swing-frame. her head is knocked and she falls unconscious.

SPIKE
Oi!

SARIA turns to see a vamped out SPIKE about to punch her. SARIA grabs SPIKE's fist. She glares at him before ripping out the cross-bolt that became embedded in his palm.

SPIKE yells in pain.

SARIA punches SPIKE. It is rapidly followed by a kick which SPIKE defends although a second kicks reaches it's target.

SARIA grabs SPIKE by the throat.

SARIA
[Broken English]
When is the MOTHER arising?

SPIKE looks at SARIA clueless.

SPIKE
[Gasping for air]
Does it look like I know who the bloody mother
is?

SARIA knees in the groin.

SPIKE groans in pain.

SARIA
LIAR!
[Beat]
You were at the Mother's lair!

SPIKE
[In agony]
Can't… say… I know… the place…

SARIA vamps out and shoves her fangs into SPIKE's neck. She gulps greedily.

BUFFY
Hey… bitch!

SARIA turns around to face BUFFY.

BUFFY
You hurt my sister-

BUFFY immediately recognises SARIA's face.

The screen flashes white as we experience a rapid succession of BUFFY's thoughts.

Flash To: Tribal Camp [Ext.], Night
There is a fire. An old Chinese man uses coloured oils to put face markings on a human SARIA's face.

Flash To: Jungle [Ext.], Evening
A human looking SARIA is battling a vampire. She uses a series of slayer like moves to rapidly dispatch the vampire.

Flash To: Tribal Camp [Ext.], Evening
SARIA is bitten by a vampire.

Flash To: Tribal Camp [Ext.], Evening
SARIA sucks on an open flesh wound.

Flash To: Tribal Camp [Ext.], Evening
SARIA lies on the ground watching a figure walk away.

Flash To: Cemetery [Ext.], Night
SARIA steps out of the shadows. BUFFY tries moving backwards but she stumbles over something; BUFFY looks helpless.

The screen flashes white again.

BUFFY stares at SARIA.

BUFFY
[Realising]
I know you…

SARIA throws SPIKE backwards, grabs her weapon and sprints away.

BUFFY stands completely still for a moment before realising where she is again.

BUFFY moves over to SPIKE.

SPIKE is on the ground. He rubs his head. he looks up to see BUFFY extending him a hand. SPIKE pauses a moment before accepting it. BUFFY helps pull SPIKE up.

BUFFY turns to DAWN who is being looked over by WILLOW.

BUFFY
You okay Dawn?

DAWN
[Sluggishly]
Yeah. Just a little light headed.

BUFFY looks to WILLOW.

BUFFY
Can you get Dawn home?

WILLOW nods as she helps DAWN to her feet.

WILLOW
What are you gonna do?

BUFFY looks off in the direction in which SARIA left by.

BUFFY
I'm gonna track the vamp…

BUFFY turns to SPIKE.

In the background we hear a roll of thunder before the rain starts pouring down... again.

BUFFY
You okay to help?

SPIKE nods.

BUFFY turns to WILLOW and DAWN. She smiles before running off, closely followed by SPIKE, after SARIA

DAWN
[Worried]
Stay safe!


Scene: Xander's Apartment [Int.], Late Evening
There is a wordless, sad tune in the background throughout this scene.

The camera moves through XANDER's apartment. We can hear the noise of the rain pounding against the windows once more.

The camera continues it's path until it enters XANDER's bedroom where we find XANDER. His room is looking a little bland. White sheets cover the bed. The box of ANYA's belongings lies on the floor and the snow globe and phone are the only objects that are visible on the bed side cabinet.

XANDER is lying on his side looking at an object on the wall. A photograph of ANYA and himself.

He continues to stare at it.

Abruptly XANDER grabs the snow globe and violently hurls it at the wall directly above the photograph. It smashes and shattered glass falls to the floor.

The phone rings.

XANDER takes a deep breath before picking the phone up.

XANDER
Xander Harris…

We hear an unrecognisable voice on the other end of the line.

XANDER reaches into the drawer of the bed side cabinet and pulls out a notepad and pen. He clearly writes: "SERVICE 10 am"

XANDER
[Sadly]
Thank you.
[Pause]
Yeah… bye.

XANDER disconnects the phone. There is a sad expression on his face.

Placing the phone back on the bed side cabinet, XANDER gets up. Slamming the door shut, XANDER exits the room.

The camera focuses on the wall as the liquid from the snow globe dribbles over the photograph of ANYA and XANDER.


Scene: Summer's House [Ext.], Night
WILLOW and DAWN dash up the path to the back door of the house. WILLOW stops under the shelter of the porch and DAWN joins her.

DAWN shivers from the cold as she watches the rain continue to pour down while WILLOW fumbles to find the right door key.

WILLOW
When I saw Giles earlier…

WILLOW stops looking at the keys and turns to DAWN. DAWN focuses on what WILLOW is saying.

WILLOW
[Continued]
It scared me.
[Pause]
I guess… I guess because I thought he'd
see the Willow that tried to kill him and
not me… the real me…

DAWN turns to WILLOW.

DAWN
He loves you Willow. That is all the matters.

DAWN shares a reassuring smile with WILLOW; it is all the pair need to know they have made up.

There is another roll of thunder and DAWN shivers again.

WILLOW turns her attention to her keys once more. She is struggling to find the right one. DAWN points to the right one to hurry the process; WILLOW smiles before using the key to open the door.


Scene: Summer's House [Int.], Night
Inside GILES is sitting at the kitchen counter. He is looking at some pieces of paper in his hand which he quickly puts in his jacket pocket.

DAWN smiles to GILES before looking back at WILLOW who looks a little uneasy.

DAWN
Need change of clothes.

DAWN exits the kitchen and runs upstairs.

GILES stands up to face WILLOW.

WILLOW
Spike was attacked by a vampire.
[Beat]
Buffy needs me to research.

WILLOW opens up her lap top that lies on the kitchen counter.

WILLOW
[Reaching out]
I'd like it if you helped…

WILLOW looks up at GILES. He smiles.

GILES
[Softly]
I'd like that too.

WILLOW returns to smile before returning her attention to the computer screen. She is typing away.

GILES sits down next to her.

WILLOW shivers.

GILES takes off his jacket and offers it to WILLOW.

GILES
You're cold.

WILLOW allows GILES to loosely place the jacket around her shoulders.

WILLOW
Thanks.
[Pause]
And… sorry.

GILES and WILLOW face one another.

WILLOW
For everything… I just…

GILES places his hand on top of WILLOW's.

GILES
You're strong Willow. You are SO strong.
[Pause]
What you went through last summer… it was
dark and it was evil and it was wrong. But you
came back from that.
[Pause]
Not many people could of done that.
[Pause]
But you did.

WILLOW has tears in her eyes.

WILLOW leans forward and hugs GILES tightly. He returns the hug just as tightly.

WILLOW
Thank you.

WILLOW and GILES break apart.

GILES
I'm proud of you Willow. Remember that.

WILLOW can't help but smile and cry. She wipes a tear away from her eye and turns back to the computer with her determined WILLOW-like resolve.

WILLOW
I'm gonna try and match the vampire's
bio to anything we have on our records.

GILES
No books?

WILLOW
Mostly frazzled when the shop went down.
[Pause]
Over the past few years I've managed to scan
some of the rarer and older books into the
computer.
[Pause]
And we have some lying around the house…

GILES
Maybe I should just make some tea.

WILLOW gives an apologetic look as GILES gets up and goes to fill the kettle.

WILLOW types a little more data into the computer before pressing enter. The computer searches for any matches.

WILLOW leans back in the chair and places her hands in the jacket pockets in an attempt to warm them up. Her facial expressions change as she realises something is in one of the pockets. She pulls it out.

In the background we see GILES busily making his tea. In the foreground we see WILLOW looking over the documents. She looks at the first one; it is an airline ticket back to London.

The camera momentarily focuses on WILLOW's confused face.

She puts the ticket down as she looks at the next pieces of paper. The first document is the deeds to the 'Magic Box' which have been put in XANDER's name and the second is a cheque for BUFFY.

GILES finishes making his cup of tea and he turns back to the counter at which WILLOW is working. He sees the documents that WILLOW is glancing over.

WILLOW turns to GILES.

WILLOW
You're leaving? When?

GILES sits down opposite WILLOW.

GILES
As soon as Anya's service is over.

WILLOW
[Upset]
Were you even going to tell us?

GILES looks down.

GILES
[Feeling Bad]
No.

WILLOW looks distraught.

GILES
And I don't want the others to know. The sooner
I leave, the better.

WILLOW picks up the cheque and deeds.

WILLOW
And for how long are you planning on going for?

GILES swallows.

GILES
Indefinitely.
[Pause]
It may not look like it now, but you are and
the others are doing extraordinarily well. These
last six months haven't been easy… but
you've survived. You've pulled each other through
it and you are all stronger for it.

WILLOW is upset.

WILLOW
But Buffy. Xander. Dawn. They need you!

GILES
Do they?
[Pause]
Buffy has supported Dawn without assistance
for well over a year now. Dawn is doing well at
school and is fast becoming her own woman.
And, yes, Xander may be at a low now, but he has
his friends to support and guide him.

WILLOW
Then why the cheque for Buffy? Why hand the shop
over to Xander?

GILES
They don't need it. Not really.
[Pause]
I could come back in a year and they would have
re-established themselves without any external
assistance.
[Pause]
But these are things I have… and no longer need.

WILLOW looks up.

WILLOW
And what about me?
[Pause]
What if I need you?

GILES smiles softly.

GILES
You have done so much in such little time.
[Pause]
You've overcome the loss of Tara. You've given up
magic and escaped the darkness. You are already
back at college. You patrol and research.
[Pause]
You don't need me. You never really have.
[Slowly]
You have the potential for great things Willow.
[Beat]
Life may get tough, but you have what it takes,
to take a stand and get everyone through the
ordeals and apocalypses and whatever life
throws at you.
[Pause]
You just have to find the courage to lead.

WILLOW ponders this as we fade to the next scene:


Scene: University Halls [Ext.], Night
We see two shadows on the side of a wall and footsteps. BUFFY and SPIKE emerge from underneath an arch way.

BUFFY and SPIKE look around. SARIA has lost them.

BUFFY
[Pissed Off]
Shit!

BUFFY rushes over to a wall that overlooks the university grounds below. There are several drunk students walking around but there is no sign of SARIA.

BUFFY turns to SPIKE. She puts her hand to her head.

BUFFY
[Determined]
We HAVE to find her.

SPIKE looks a little worried.

SPIKE
[Resolved]
Who is she?

BUFFY turns to face SPIKE.

SPIKE
The vamp.
[Beat]
Why is it so important to find her?

BUFFY
[Blasé]
She hurt Dawn.

SPIKE shakes his head.

SPIKE
You see… I don't think that's the reason.

BUFFY
[Annoyed]
Not everyone has hidden motives Spike.

SPIKE
When you saw the vamp… you recognised
her.

BUFFY turns away from SPIKE.

BUFFY
I can feel it Spike.

SPIKE
Feel what?

SPIKE moves over to BUFFY. He slowly lifts her chin; their eyes lock.

BUFFY
[Slowly]
The vampire… she…
[Pause]
She was a slayer.

SPIKE lets go. He looks at BUFFY in disbelief.

SPIKE
A slayer…
[Beat]
How?

BUFFY touches the wall with palm of her hand. She looks away from SPIKE.

BUFFY
[Upset]
I don't know.

BUFFY turns around.

BUFFY
I just saw her and knew.
[Pause]
She's been appearing in my nightmares.
[Looking Up]
She's so confused Spike. Her vampiric nature
drives her lust for death but there is still a slayer
inside.
[Beat]
She hates vampires so much. She hates what
she has become.
[Pause]
But wants revenge. It is what drives her.

SPIKE
Against who?

BUFFY looks up.

BUFFY
I'm not sure.
[Pause]
But she will kill anyone that stands in her way.
[Softly]
I'm scared Spike.

SPIKE looks up too. There is a connection, all be it a small one. SPIKE takes a step forward and he moves his hand to BUFFY's face.

We suddenly hear a scream in the background.

BUFFY pulls away and runs to the wall and looks to the far side of the campus.

BUFFY looks to SPIKE with a worried look before leaping off the wall onto a nearby roof and running towards where the scream came from.

As the rain pours down SPIKE's face, he runs off after BUFFY.


Scene: Summer's House [Int.], Night
The camera focuses on the rain outside.

The camera pans back to reveal DAWN. She has now changed her clothes and she sits hunched up on her bed listening to "Kiss The Rain" by Billie Myers.

SONG: "Why don't you. Go outside. Go outside. Kiss the rain. Whenever you need me. Kiss the rain."

There is a rumble of thunder outside.

DAWN gets up and walks to the window. She looks worried.

SONG: "Whenever I'm gone too long. If your lips feel lonely and thirsty. Kiss the rain. And wait for the dawn."

There is a flash of lightning. DAWN turns to the door before rushing out into the corridor.

SONG: "Keep in mind. We're under the same sky."

The camera follows DAWN down the stairs and into the kitchen. She stands in the doorway for a moment.

DAWN takes a deep breath.

DAWN
[Worried]
The vampire…

WILLOW and GILES are looking at the computer screen in front of them. They both turn to see DAWN.

DAWN
[Slowly]
…her name is Saria.

WILLOW looks to GILES in shock.

WILLOW
Dawnie?

DAWN looks up.

DAWN
She was a slayer.

GILES
How…
[Pause
What makes you think that?

DAWN massages her temples.

DAWN
I don't know… I just FEEL it.

WILLOW
Giles?

GILES turns to WILLOW.

GILES
Search the Watcher's Diaries.

WILLOW turns to the lap top and starts typing away. The camera moves over to DAWN who watches the computer intently.

A picture starts to reveal itself on the screen.

It is SARIA.

WILLOW turns to DAWN and GILES.

WILLOW
[Worried]
That's her.


Scene: 'Magic Box' [Ext.], Night
We find XANDER walking along the street. It is still raining and he is drenched. Whether he realises where he is going or not is uncertain but either way he finds himself outside the magic shop.

XANDER opens the door and enters.


Scene: 'Magic Box' [Int.], Night
It is dark but the destruction to the shop is obvious.

We follow XANDER as he moves to the collapsed counter. He looks down. We can see XANDER looking at his reflection in the broken glass.

XANDER exits the shop.


Scene: University Halls [Ext.], Night
BUFFY sprints towards one of the Fraternity Houses. SPIKE is close behind.

BUFFY reaches the house and comes to a stop.

Garage music emanates from inside the house. BUFFY grabs a stake from her pocket. She turns to SPIKE with a worried glance.

BUFFY pushes open the door to the Fraternity House. SPIKE stands behind her.

The camera makes a squealing noise as it pans backwards to reveal a very disturbing scene: bodies drained of life and mutilated corpses lay around the building. There was obviously a party going on in the house before every single person was maliciously murdered.

The scene fades to black.


Scene: Fraternity House [Int.], Night
BUFFY steps into the house. She crouches down to check for a pulse on a body; all she finds is the puncture marks of vampire fangs.

She turns to see a COLLEGE GIRL crouched on the ground, rocking back and forth. We presume she was the person that screamed. Putting her stake away, BUFFY moves over to the girl.

BUFFY
It's okay.
[Looking Around]
You're safe.

The COLLEGE GIRL is in complete shock. She doesn’t even respond; she just looks blankly into the distance.

BUFFY stands back and turns around. The garage music continues to play. BUFFY moves over to the hi-fi and switches it off.

There is only silence.

BUFFY desperately looks around. She feels so helpless.

She spots the phone.

BUFFY rushes to it and quickly dials 911.

The camera moves back to the doorway in which SPIKE is still standing. He makes a very small step inside. He is visibly distressed by the scene he sees before him.

SPIKE falls to his knees and the camera focuses on the reflection of the scene around him that can be seen in his eyes.

The camera literally moves into SPIKE and we are suddenly hit with a succession of his memories. Flash by flash we see multiple scenes of SPIKE biting people, killing people, massacring people. We see SPIKE relishing in it.

And then we see SPIKE on the floor in utter distress. He is completely shock and disturbed by the scene before him.

SPIKE
[Quietly]
No!
[Pause]
God no!

And we suddenly realise for the first time in hundreds of years, SPIKE feels remorse. It has taken this trigger to make him realise the pain and suffering he has caused to hundreds of people for so long.

BUFFY hangs up the phone. She looks around - clearly upset. She looks to a wall that she hadn't previously spotted.

BUFFY gasps.

Moving forward very slowly, BUFFY approaches the wall she has just spotted. The camera pans around to reveal a message has been left for BUFFY by SARIA.

"YOU NEXT"

BUFFY looks away upset. She looks to the COLLEGE GIRL who continues to rock back and forth. BUFFY moves over to her.

BUFFY
We need to move you.

The girl continues to rock.

BUFFY looks to SPIKE.

BUFFY
Spike!
[Loudly]
Spike!

SPIKE makes no response either. BUFFY looks to the COLLEGE GIRL and then back to SPIKE.

BUFFY moves over to SPIKE.

She places her hand on his shoulder.

BUFFY
[Softly]
Spike?

There is a moment of calm as SPIKE continues to monotonously stare at the death caused by SARIA that surrounds him, but this is quickly disturbed as SPIKE sharply looks up and vamps out.

He backs away from BUFFY continuing to adorn his game face.

SPIKE
[Roughly]
Stay away from me!

BUFFY looks extremely worried.

SPIKE looks down at his hands and then back up to BUFFY. He realises he has just snapped.

He stands up and sprints away. BUFFY looks on anxiously.

We hear police sirens in the distance. BUFFY turns into the building and the camera pans back to once again reveal the amount of death created in the massacre.


Scene: The Bluff [Ext.], Night
BUFFY solemnly walks up the path leading to where WILLOW brought forth the Satanic Temple in 'Grave'. The rain continues to pour down and thunder can be heard in the distance.

Up ahead BUFFY spots another figure silhouetted in the darkness. She stops for a moment.

She watches the figure before walking on to reach their position.

BUFFY
[Softly]
Hi.

BUFFY stands directly behind the figure; it is XANDER.

XANDER
[Gently]
Hi.

The camera watches XANDER as looks across the vista to the sea in the distance. BUFFY steps up next to him.

XANDER
This place… it's so beautiful. So tranquil.
[Looking Down]
It's hard to believe that just a few months
ago it could have been the origin of an
apocalypse.

BUFFY turns to XANDER.

BUFFY
You stopped it.

XANDER turns to BUFFY.

XANDER
WE stopped it.

BUFFY and XANDER look at one another carefully.

BUFFY
You've been crying.

XANDER
All day.

BUFFY
It hurts…

XANDER looks a little confused.

BUFFY
…to see you - in pain.

XANDER
It hurts… to think that Anya has gone. But
I have to accept that. I have to move on.
She made her decision and Giles was right…
I can't lie to myself. I can't pretend the love
I felt for Anya was the kind that she wanted
so badly.

BUFFY looks up at XANDER.

XANDER
I have my friends to take care of… and right
now that is all the matters.

BUFFY hugs XANDER tightly. Over XANDER's shoulder we see tears comes to BUFFY's eyes.

BUFFY and XANDER both pull away, but they also keep very close to one another.

XANDER
You're crying..

BUFFY
It's been a hard day.
[Pause]
There is a new vampire in town… a sired
slayer…

XANDER looks shocked.

BUFFY
I couldn't stop her…
[Pause]
She killed people. A lot of people.

BUFFY looks up into XANDER's eyes.

BUFFY
She was warning me Xander.
[Pause]
She is seeking revenge for god knows what
and if I try and interfere she will kill everyone
and everything I love.

XANDER
[Reassuring]
You WILL stop her Buffy.

BUFFY
[Upset]
I don't know if I can Xan.

XANDER looks up. BUFFY has more tears in her eyes.

XANDER moves his hand up to BUFFY's face. He softly touches her tears and wipes it away, the saline water rapidly being diluted by the intense rain.

XANDER
[Whispering]
I am here… whenever you need me.

BUFFY and XANDER are very close.

BUFFY
[Whispering]
I know.

BUFFY looks up into XANDER's eyes. Very slowly, XANDER leans down and BUFFY stretches up… and their lips touch.

The camera moves in slightly closer and focuses on the friend's faces. BUFFY and XANDER's lips stay touching as the pair shares a gentle, romantic, spontaneous kiss.

BUFFY and XANDER both draw back. They look at one another, rather shocked at their own actions.

BUFFY
[Quietly]
Come home.

XANDER smiles very softly before BUFFY and XANDER turn and walk away from the bluff. XANDER keeps his hands in his pockets while BUFFY holds hers to her stomach.
