ACT IV

Scene: Summer's House [Int.], Night
The back door is opened by WILLOW.

As soon as she sees BUFFY and XANDER she joins them in a tight group hug.

WILLOW
[Worried]
Are you okay?

XANDER nods.

BUFFY
We're fine.

DAWN and GILES are sitting around the kitchen counter.

DAWN
Where's Spike?

BUFFY
He� he had things to deal with.

GILES
Did you find the vampire?

BUFFY looks down awkwardly.

BUFFY
No�I was too late.

WILLOW
For what?

BUFFY
She killed twenty-three people at a frat party
at UC Sunnydale.

WILLOW, GILES and DAWN are taken aback.

BUFFY
It was a massacre.

GILES looks up.

GILES
You couldn't have done anything.

BUFFY
I should have been quicker. If I hadn't been
so slow when I first saw her�

DAWN takes BUFFY's hand.

DAWN
You tried.

BUFFY looks upset and tired.

BUFFY
There is something you should know about the
vampire�

WILLOW turns her computer around to reveal the image of SARIA. BUFFY looks a little shocked.

WILLOW
Her name is Saria.
[Pause]
The sired slayer.

BUFFY sits down at the computer and scrolls glances over some of the information below; unfortunately for her it is all in Indian.

BUFFY
[Whispering]
Saria�
[Asking]
You found her in the records?

GILES
Not so much�

BUFFY looks up.

GILES, WILLOW and DAWN look a little awkward.

BUFFY
[Impatient]
Guys?

GILES
Dawn had a vision as it were�

DAWN looks down.

XANDER
A vision from who?

GILES
We're not sure.

BUFFY looks to DAWN.

BUFFY
Saria� who is she?

WILLOW
We haven't been able to translate everything yet
but from what we can tell, she was a slayer
that worked in the Indian sub-continent in the
early eleventh century.

BUFFY
So who sired her?

WILLOW takes a deep breath.

WILLOW
We're not sure�
[Beat]
What we do know, is that she had a lover�
[Pause]
He was murdered by another vampire�
[Pause]
The Mother.

BUFFY looks shocked.

WILLOW
It is written that ever since, Saria has been seeking
revenge against the Mother.
[Pause]
We think that's why she's in Sunnydale.

BUFFY turns to XANDER who shares a look of worry.

Scene: Street [Ext.], Night
BUFFY and XANDER walk along the side-walk. Their faces are illuminated by the street lights above.

XANDER
So you okay?

BUFFY looks up.

BUFFY
A little worried.

XANDER
You'll deal.
[Pause]
You always do.

BUFFY turns to XANDER and shares a small smile.

The friends keep walking.

XANDER
[Softly]
The kiss� I'm sorry.

BUFFY turns to XANDER.

BUFFY
It's okay. I shouldn't have� I mean after everything
that has happened recently.

XANDER
We were both in this emotional place�

XANDER turns to BUFFY. BUFFY just looks up.

There is pretty much just awkwardness. They reach the outside of XANDER's apartment.

XANDER
Looks like this is my stop.

BUFFY smiles.

She reaches up and kisses XANDER softly on the cheek.

BUFFY
You ready for tomorrow?

XANDER looks up into the night sky.

XANDER
Sometimes we just have to let go.

Scene: Cemetery [Ext.], Late Morning
The camera is focused on the sky above. It is still raining hard.

"Fields of Gold" by Eva Cassidy plays in the background.

SONG: "You'll remember me when the west wind moves. Upon the fields of barley. You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky. As we walk in the fields of gold."

The camera pans down and we find XANDER, BUFFY, WILLOW, GILES, DAWN and a PRIEST surrounding a small half metre hole dug into the ground.

The camera focuses on each individual separately. Each one has tears in their eyes.

The camera focuses on the PRIEST. We can see he his speaking but his voice is dulled by the song as are all other noises made by the congregation.

SONG: "So she took her love. For to gaze awhile. Upon the fields of barley. In his arms she fell as her hair came down. Among the fields of gold."

The camera watches WILLOW standing in front of GILES. We see WILLOW start to cry and GILES put his arm around her while he uses his other hand to hold a black umbrella above their heads.

The camera now focuses on BUFFY and DAWN. DAWN is crying. She grasps BUFFY's hand tightly. BUFFY looks up and we see her make eye contact with XANDER.

XANDER looks back down. He picks up a tree which he lowers into the small hole in the ground.

SONG: "Will you stay with me, will you be my love. Among the fields of barley. We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky. As we lie in the fields of gold."

The camera stays focused on XANDER as he crouches down next to the tree. The rain dribbles down over his hair and merges with his tears. He reaches into his pocket and produces his wedding ring. He places it in the hole alongside the tree. As we see him whisper "goodbye" he stands up.

The PRIEST hands XANDER a spade.

We watch XANDER add some earth to the hole. He passes the spade on to BUFFY. Their hands touch; just for an instant. They look at each other; their faces are both solemn.

BUFFY adds some earth to the hole.

We continue to watch DAWN then WILLOW and finally GILES add earth to the base of the tree.

SONG: "See the west wind move like a lover so. Upon the fields of barley. Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth. Among the fields of gold. I never made promises lightly. And there have been some that I've broken. But I swear in the days still left. We'll walk in the fields of gold. We'll walk in the fields of gold."

We watch GILES look at BUFFY, WILLOW, DAWN and XANDER in turn. His expression is one of sadness, both for the loss of ANYA and the fact that he is leaving.

DAWN steps forward and pushes a wooden plaque into the ground in front of the tree. It reads: "ANYA. Always"

GILES, WILLOW and DAWN turn and slowly walk away.

BUFFY moves to XANDER. She gently touches his hand before kissing him on the cheek. As BUFFY moves away, XANDER holds on to her hand a little while.

He lets go and BUFFY turns and walks away.

XANDER is alone.

We watch as the rain continues to pour and the camera moves further and further away.

After an unknown period of time XANDER turns and leaves. As he reaches the exit to the cemetery he turns.

Under a tree in the distance SPIKE is standing. Watching.

SPIKE and XANDER make eye contact for a few moments before XANDER walks away.

Scene: Summer's House [Int.], Early Afternoon
The song continues as BUFFY, DAWN and WILLOW enter the house. There is something on the counter. DAWN picks it up; it is an envelope addressed to BUFFY. She hands it to her sister.

BUFFY puts her coat down and opens the letter. She pulls out the cheque.

The camera focuses on BUFFY. She puts her hand to her mouth in shock. She starts to cry.

DAWN takes the cheque from BUFFY's hands and looks at it; she looks up to BUFFY in amazement.

The two sisters hug.

SONG: "Many years have passed since those summer days. Among the fields of barley. See the children run as the sun goes down. Among the fields of gold. You'll remember me when the west wind moves. Upon the fields of barley. You can tell the sun in his jealous sky. When we walked in the fields of gold. When we walked in the fields of gold. When we walked in the fields of gold."

The camera focuses on WILLOW as she looks out of the window.

Scene: Xander's Apartment [Int.], Afternoon
XANDER opens his door to find an envelope addressed to him lying on the floor. He picks it up and opens it.

He sits down as he realises what he has been given. He starts to cry.

Scene: Plane [Int.], Afternoon
GILES is in the plane. He looks out of the window and smiles.

The song fades out.
