It is early evening. Xander is working in the shop/caf�. There is loud music on so he doesn't hear it when someone enters the shop. Someone walks right up to him and whispers in his ear. The camera (in front of Xan) looks over Xan's shoulder to reveal Halfrek. Xander tells Hallie to get out/ asks what she wants. (Halfrek mocks Xander to start with). Halfrek tells Xander that Anya should have never left. Xander says it is too late. Halfrek: "Is that so".

Xander turns on Hallie and asks what she means. Halfrek tells Xander that Anya is still alive. her essence still exists� for now� they just have to find it. Xander backs away. He tells Halfrek that Anya cannot be brought back. Halfrek tells Xander that she knows he wants Anya back. Xander says that Anya made her choice he has to accept that. Halfrek pauses before telling Xander that Anya's essence is fading as she loses hope�she tells Xander that with every moment he thinks about it the less chance they have of getting Anya back. Halfrek teleports away. Xander looks around the shop disorientated. Willow walks into the shop all smiles. She tries speaking to Xander but Xander pushes past her leaving Willow worried and confused.

Late night/ early morning. Buffy and Dawn are out patrolling. They comes across a random demon. Buffy starts to fight it. The demon pins her down. The demon gets killed thanks to Spike. Spike helps Buffy up. There is awkward silence. Spike turns and runs off. Dawn looks to Buffy worried. From a building's roof, not far away, DRUSILLA watches Spike and Buffy intently and makes some insane, metaphor-filled sentence that very few people would ever understand.

NEXT DAY. Willow and Amy walk through the uni campus. They are joking around. Willow spots a depressed looking Buffy looking into space at a table nearby. Willow says she to go but would like to see Amy again. Amy suggests going to the Bronze that night. Willow says she'd like that. Willow tells Amy to meet her in the magic shop at a specific time (Willow has left her purse or something there). Willow smiles to Amy before moving towards Buffy. Willow sits down next to Buffy. She asks if there is a depressed spell. Buffy is confused. Willow tells Buffy how she is worried about Xander. Buffy is kinda elsewhere. She asks if Xander is in trouble. Willow thinks he'll be okay� Willow asks Buffy what is wrong. Buffy says she bumped into Spike last night. Willow asks what kinda bump and Buffy glares. Willow apologises. Buffy says it was just so awkward. Willow says that is normal for Spike. Buffy says that he was different; he wasn't aggressive anymore. Buffy talks about how she treated Spike badly when they were sleeping together; he deserves better. Willow asks Buffy if she has feelings for Spike still. Buffy says she isn't sure. She can't seem to tell how she feels about anybody. Willow suggests that Buffy come out with her and Amy that night. Buffy says she has uni work to do; her slaying is gonna be pushed back as it is. Willow understands.

Xander lies on the bed looking up at the ceiling. He gets up and opens a drawer to take a picture of Anya out. He stares at it fondly. He looks outside; it is light. There is a knock on the door. It is Buffy. You can make this scene quite romantic if ya wanna. Buffy says Willow told her about last night; she asks if everything is alright. Xander says he has a tough decision to make; and his heart and head are telling him different things to do. Buffy guesses it isn't a choice over the colour paint he uses in the caf�. Xander says no. Buffy tells Xander that your head might tell you the logical thing to do� but your heart tells you the right thing to do. Xander thinks about this.

Xander stands in front of the tree planted in Anya's memory (in the cemetery). Halfrek speaks to him - basically asking if he wants her back. Xander turns to Halfrek. Xander asks how he gets Anya back. Halfrek tells Xander that Anya's essence is one of millions that wander through the expanse that is the ether. Even if he does find her he might not find a way out of the Ether again. Xander asks how they get in. She tells him they need the darkest of magics; the kind that would kill most mortals. Xander looks up worried. Xander says he can't make anyone do that. Halfrek tells Xander that sometimes you have to make sacrifices. Xander says there has to be another way. Halfrek tells Xander that to enter the Ether takes great power there is no other way. Halfrek passes Xander a stone.

In fast motion we see the sun set.

Spike and Dawn walk through the cemetery. Dawn holds a stake in her hand; they're patrolling d'uh. She asks if he is okay. Spike says he is dealing. Dawn thinks that is good. There is a moment of silence. Dawn tells Spike that she hasn't told Buffy or the others about the soul� but she thinks maybe Spike should. Spike ponders this. He says the soul doesn't change who he is or what he has done. Dawn asks Spike if it hurt� getting the soul. Spike talks about suddenly realising the pain he has caused so many people and how he wanted to die. Dawn says she is glad he is still about. We hear rustling up ahead. Dawn and Spike freeze. We see it again and a vampire runs through the bushes. Spike tells Dawn to stay there. Spike runs after it. Dawn stands still and mumbles something to herself. She sits down on a gravestone or something; we see a figure approach her from behind. Dru makes some really seductive comment (like she did in S2 to the little kid by the swings when Angel saw her for the first time� was it Halloween?). Dawn turns around shit scared and screams for Spike.

The camera zooms backwards through the bushes to Spike. He hears the screams while beating the crap out of a vamp. "Dawn�" The vampire tries to hits Spike over the head with a branch but Spike turns, grabs the branch and stakes the vamp with it. Spike sprints back. Dawn is gone. He looks down and sees Dru's dolly. Spike whispers "Dru".

Xander is in the training room. He is pummelling into a punching bag. Willow comes in to the room and watches Xander for a little bit. Softly she asks Xander what is bothering him so much. Xander keeps punching. Xander tells Willow that he doesn't want her involved. Willow asks involved in what. Xander tells Willow to back off. Willow comes over and stops the punching bag moving. She looks at Xander aggressively; "Why?". "Because it involves magic" Xander shouts. Willow goes silent. Xander tells Willow that there is a way to bring Anya back; her essence still exits but without dark and powerful magics he can't do anything to save her. Willow looks up and says she can� Xander shouts no. He can't let Willow use magic. Willow says she can do it. Xander looks to Willow. He says he wants Anya back so much� but he will not risk losing someone he loves to do that. Willow asks if Xander is gonna leave Anya there. Xander says he's not sure he has a choice. A voice from the doorway tells Xander you always have a choice. It is Amy.

Willow says: "Amy�". Xander asks how much Amy heard. Amy says enough; says she can help. Xander says he can't� he won't let someone else risk their lives; the spell involves creating a rift into the ether; the magic it involves could kill her. Amy tells Xander and Willow that (witch hunter)'s sister died because of her; this is her chance to make amends. Amy tells Xander she can and she wants to do this. Amy says please. Xander looks to Willow. Willow looks to Amy and nods. Amy extends her hand and Xander passes the stone.

Buffy is at the kitchen counter trying to study while listening to some music. There is loud rushed, impatient banging on the door. Buffy moans about the interruption and answers the door. She is surprised to see Spike. Spike and Buffy stare at one another for a moment. Buffy knows� "Dawn�" Spike says he was fighting another vamp. Buffy slams Spike against the wall threatening him with a weapon. Buffy viciously asks Spike who took Dawn. Spike says Drusilla. Buffy backs away from Spike. Spike asks if she is okay. Buffy's head bolts upright and she speaks like Dawn and says what Dawn is saying. From what she says she can tell she in the mansion. Buffy speaks normally again and she looks a little weakened. Spike asks if she is alright. Buffy says she need to find Dawn.

We watch Dru smell a flower from the garden at Crawford St Mansion. She brings it inside with her where we find Dawn lying on the floor with her hands tied in front of her. Dru keeps seductively talking to her. Saying (in her insane vamp logic way) that the flower smells dirty, dirty, DIRTY. She looks to Dawn. She tells Dawn that Dawn smells of the slayer; she can feel the slayer running through her. Dawn asks Dru what she wants. Dru says that Sp(o)ike and B(oi)uffy have been naughty; they need teaching a lesson. Dawn says that she will kill Dru herself. Dru giggles then grabs Dawn by the throat and tells her off. Dawn spits in Dru's face.

Willow finishes pouring powder (in a magic circle) around Amy. She asks if Amy is sure. Amy says yes in her typical Amy like way. Amy closes her eyes and starts concentrates hard. She starts to chant. Xander walks into the room and stands next to Willow. He looks worried. The candles at the edges of the magic circle all ignite at the same time. Amy continues to chant. The magical stone floats up. Amy's voice starts to waver. Xander asks if Amy is okay. Willow says she losing control. She says they need to stop her. Willow rushes forward but is knocked back by an unseen force. Xander rushes to Willow's side as Amy suddenly bolts upright and looks upwards with black eyes (kinda like Willow in "Becoming"). Amy chants clearly and effeiciently. The pebble breaks up into tiny powder like granules held in a slow motion suspension. Amy puts her hand out and the granules fall into her palm. Amy speaks some more before blowing the particles forwards which creates a "thick air" in front of her. Amy collapses to the floor. Willow rushes to her; Amy is alive. Willow turns to Xander; she tells Xander that once inside finding Anya is going to be near impossible and there might not be a way out either. Xander looks up; he tells Willow that he has to do this. Willow understands. Xander kisses Willow's forehead before running forward. Amy opens her eyes. Willow looks after Xander. Willow looks back to Amy. Amy tells her to go. Willow looks to the thick air and runs in after Xander. Amy pants as she looks up to see Willow looking back through the thick air; the thick air thins out and the rift is closed. Amy looks worried.

*You can use most of the draft's first ether scene here). Inside the ether Willow is surrounded by ghost like figures. Everything is grey. She can't see Xander. She spins around and around. She sees Xander. Xander is glad but cross that Willow came. Willow says she wanted to help. Xander and Willow moves through the crowds of people pulling people back to see their faces. They cannot find Anya. The camera pulls up to show the impossibility of the situation as Willow and Xander can be clearly seen in a sea of grey; finding Anya will be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Buffy and Spike reach the track leading down to the mansion. Spike asks Buffy if she has a plan. Buffy says kill Dru and save Dawn. Spike asks what about me. Buffy basically has a go at Spike saying he was with Dawn and he let her be taken. Spike says he was fighting another vampire. Buffy says there is always an excuse with Spike. Extract dialogue from the draft's final BS scene� remember Buffy does NOT know about soul. It ends with Buffy walking down the track. Spike stand still refusing to move; trying to pretend he doesn�t care.

The door to the mansion breaks open. Buffy walks in and storms through the building. Dru stands behind Buffy holding Dawn up by her throat. Dru is her wicked sadistic tone says hello B(oi)uffy. Buffy tells Dru to put Dawn down. Dru starts going on about the flowers ad stars whispering to her that Buffy needs punishing. Dru leans in to bite Dawn. Buffy screams "Dawnnn"

Amy tries to use her weakened powers to regenerate the stone from the powder on the ground but it isn't working. She looks to the magic circle clearly worried about Willow.

Back in the Ether. Xander and Willow keep moving through the bodies. Xander turns to Willow distraught. Willow tells Xander to concentrate on Anya. Xander looks to Willow worried. He closes his eyes and concentrates on Anya. Xander's eyes burst open. He turns to another direction and runs through the crowds with Willow close behind. He comes across Anya. She looks faded. She looks up and says "Xander" meekly. Xander holds Anya tightly. Willow and Xander carrying Anya move back through the grey to where they came into the ether. Xander asks how they get out. Willow moves her hand through the ether. She sense the weak point. Everything goes slow-motion as Willow turns to Xander before turning back to the weak point placing her hand on it and chanting - Willow is doing magic. She completes the chant - we return to normal-speed-motion. Willow pants as the thick air reforms. Xander, Anya and Willow go back through. Amy hugs Willow. Xander lays Anya on the floor. He tries to speak to her. Anya opens her eyes. She is crying. Halfrek appears. She says her work is done. Xander tells Halfrek to leave. While Xander is arguing with Halfrek Anya walks into the main part of the shop. Willow tells Xander. Xander follows Anya in. Anya says it has changed. She says everything has changed. Anya runs off.

Dawn is about to be bit. Spike charges into Drusilla and knocks her to a lower platform. Buffy rushes up to Dawn. Dawn and Buffy hug tightly. Below, Drusilla starts beating on Spike and he lets himself get beat. Drusilla tells Spike he was always lower than her; he slept with the slayer. He is turning into Angel. Buffy goes to beat up Dru. Dawn stops her and tells Buffy that Spike needs this. Spike gets pissed off. He turns the tables on Dru. He says he isn't lower at all. Spike prepares to stake Dru. Dru cackles. Spike tells Dru to leave and he promises her if she comes back she will be staked. Dru leans forward and whispers in Spike's ear that she is going to get daddy back. Dru walks away leaving Spike pissed off. Spike looks up to Dawn and Buffy. He walks away.

The door to Spike's crypt opens. It is Buffy. Spike asks if she is there to give him another lecture; use him as a scape-goat. Spike says he won't take it no more. Buffy says she is there to say sorry. Spike looks up. Buffy says that Spike deserves to be treated better. He has saved Dawn and herself and helped the gang numerous times. She has never really thanked him before. She says she knows he loves her she just hopes that isn't the reason he helps. Buffy walks away.

Anya is standing in front of her memorial tree. Xander comes up from behind (not like that u sick pervert!). Xander says about the shop/caf� being Anya's still. Anya tells Xander to let her down gently. (Basically all the dialogue from the draft's last XA scene). Anya walks away.
