I don't know if you have read any of te alternative stuff from the lord of the rings trilogy, but tolkien had enough notes and incomplete stories for about 25 books, and these notes and stories have been analized by chris tolkien, his son, and he has presented many of them in book form for..still incomplete with comentary on what was going on from what he knew...and an intresting side note that should have been included in the books was a long conversation between frodo and gandalf in minis trith(gondor)after the fall of sauron when they where waiting for the marrige of ewon and aragorn...

When Gandalf had was first on his way to the shire in the first time in 30 years at the begging of the hobbit, he had allot on his mind...he had entered dolth gor in mirkwood, and confirmed his suspicions that the necromancer was actually Sauron retaking shape and gaining power...as has been noted, when in the dungeons of Dolth Mor, he found thain, the father of thorien oakshield, wwho had given him the key and map to eabor...the fallen dwarven hall which was held by the Dragon Smaug, since then, he there was a meating of the white council, which saurmen, who they knew not at the time was evil yet, still presided over...Gandalf wanted to take imediate action against Sauron, for he feared that he would emerge in full strengh eventually and attack Lorien and Riverdell imdeiately from his hold in Dolth Gor...even these two powerful elven fiefdom's could nnot withstand the full wait of the Dark Lord if he where present, for his power alone was as great if not greater then all the Istari(the 5 wizards who where gods in the flesh of whom Gandalf and Saurmen where of there numbers)for he was pure spirt now and not bound by flesh, also, the Istari where not premited to match strength with strength against Sauron, for the pursuit of power was deamed corrupting to the gods, as case with we see what happened to Saurmen...but also of concern was Smaug, this great dragon could storm and rout a hold on his own, as was seen with eabor...he feared that Sauron, being the squir of the fallen Melekor(the devil)and his chief agent had dominion over all things evil, and would wrestle comand of smaugs action by his will...now Gandalf was a seer also as gadrial was, while not as great...he only recived impressions and the impressions of a young Hobbit burned in his mind that he had met 30 years before when he was but a child, of course this was Bilbo...but he did not no why he was drawn to this Hobbit, so his journey was two fold in comming to the shire, to relax in the quietest place he knew and ponder smaug, dolth gor, and sauron before the white council reconvined(because Saurmen had sucsessfully swayed the council to simply wait suaron out with his voice, being he was the master of ring lore, he knew sauron would call to the ring and it would resurface when he was ready, and he was surching with the plantir no one knew he had, in hopes of capturing the ring for himself and replacing the dark lord...at this time being merely a counciler and not a tyrant as he was to become, the power and enchantment of saurmens voice was so strong that he could even sway Erlond Halfelf to control him)so Gandalf needed to plot how to engadge Saurmen to try and win his plan of imediate attacl on Dolth Gor into action...plus, he wanted to see what had become of this Bilbo his thoughts where drawn to. By chance, he ran into on the road, the haughty Thorin Oaksheild(at this time Gandalf did not know what he held was the Key and Map of Eabor...for he did not know the man he ran into in Dolth Mor was thain oakshield, thorin's father...he talked with Thorin for a while because thorin was seeking his council...Thorin Told him of his plan to take back Eabor, and contend with Smaug...this idea seemed good to Gandalf, because he would both deal with Smaug and provide a Northren shield for Gondor in the restablished Dwarven hall so that it could not be caught in a crossfire between Dolth Mor and Morder...he figured this was Saurons plan that after he destroyed Lorien and Riverdell with his northren forces in Dolth Gor and the aide of smaug, he would turn on Gondor, and Rohan and put them in a squeeze after he restablished Morder...if smaug was not defeated and eabor restablished, regardless of whether or not Sauron found the ring, he would rule the day...but this chance meeting on the way to the shire set into effect a chain of events that would lead to Saurons ultimate undoing and the salvation of middle earth...Gandalf realized that bilbo must be key to all of this in some odd way, so he convinced Throin that he must Take Bilbo with him...before even going to see bilbo...now when bilbo was young, he was athletic for a hobbit and loved Gandalf, for he wanted to see the world, but bilbo had grown fat and happy with teh shire life, and this was almost everyones demise...

...now when thorin met bilbo, this now fat, lazy, bumbling hobbit, he thought Dandalf was mocking him and playing a joke at his expense, but Gandalfs efforts would rule the day...from listening to Thorin, Gandalf had pieced togther the meaning of the map and key, and who it was he had meant in the pits of Dolth Gor...he revealed these things and thus restored Thorin's cofidence in him, while still reluctant, he heeded Gandalfs advice that they would fail if he did not take Bilbo with him...of course, as you know this would prove more then right...

Windfall for all number one: Biblo uncovers the ring from Gollum under the mountain...even though Gandalf was not sure of what it was for 60 years or so, in doing this, he kept the ring which was seeking to reveal itself to Sauron's call from Sauron, and latter of course it proved that under Gandalfs guidence, the ring would be undone and the power of sauron broken.

Windfall for all number two: While Gandalf was away with the forces of Erlond and Gadriel dealing with driving Sauron out of Mirkwood, Bolbo would use the ring to infiltrate Eabor and detect smaugs weak point in his belly..this would lead to smaugs death by the black arrow of Bard, and the restablishemnt of the kingdom of the Dale and Eabor.

Windfall number three: Many years latter, Saurons forces where divided in the north after he had retaken Dolth Gor, and his forces in Morder where limited to gaurding it's gates and could not go full force against Gondor...his forces in the north where divded fighting Lorien, Riverdell, and Eabor and the Kingdom of the dale which where restablished...had Eabor not been restablished, even if Lorien and Riverdell still stood and smaug was never defeated, but remained neutral, without Eabor and the dale kingdom in his way, sauron could have used half of his forces to cut of rohan and gondor and put gondor alone in a sandwhich...Gondor would have fallen, and they never could have marched on Morder, which drew Sauron's interoir forces away from San Grath and the Dark Tower, leaving the crack of doom open for Frodo and Sam to take the ring to it's destruction.

Thus, the sealing of the fate of Sauron was settled in large part by a chance meeting between Gandalf and Thorin many years before the trilogy ever took places....
