Subject: Problems with Windows XP Embedded on 686 NAND Flash ?

I just stumbled onto this site. It looks like an applicable place to ask the question. :)

I am having problems booting the Embedded Windows XP image from NAND flash off the 686 board. I flashed it from 2 different harddrives and pre-performed a bios flash format in both cases. (The date was set to 14 Feb 2004, as per instuctions) I also believe the flash procedure succeeded.

Each time I boot it fails with what seems to be an Flash Read Error on isapnp.sys during the boot process. It then instructs to boot of the CD to fix the problem. It then
basically reboots. Since I don't have the CD in question there is no way fix the alleged problem.

I tried loop-back mounting DISK.DAT on my linux box with
no joy. I cannot deternine the filesystem in this file.
I even booted KNOPPIX 3.4 and tried both ntfs and vfat
as possible filesystem types. Both results in errors.

I did manage to install Windows XP Professional SP1 on
a an harddrive for the 686 board. Now I just need to get
drivers for the COM ports and Audio. I was hoping to learn
from the Embedded XP on flash how to fix these.

Basically I need someone to confirm that 686-winxpe
actually does boot on a 686. I have the following:

686CORE-D128-F4-C266-G1-N128-S-E-A
686BASE-P-R-E2-L-U-C2-H-X2-Y4-S5

I just re-downloaded 686-winxpe.zip to confirm
it's integrity.

bash$ md5sum -b DISK.DAT ../686-winxpe.zip
3052a673c70593523137043e035eae01 *DISK.DAT
0d5b2e730387e307dac9334f290ea3ee *../686-winxpe.zip

Since XP boots off the harddrive, the only other problem
would be a broken flash chip. The BIOS low level flash format utility reports no errors. Is there any other way
to test the NAND flash's integrity ?

Regards Louis.
