My boss just bought a Pfauter P251 hobbing machine, nobody in our plant has any hobbing experience. I'm the lucky one who has to set it up. The machine manuals are a little better than worthless. I've never cut a gear and would appreciate any information I could get on how to determine speeds and feeds. I'm cutting a 30 degree involute spline with a 8/16 diametral pitch, and 23 teeth in 4140 stock. Thanks in advance for any help.

As well known, over 90% of all power gear trains have only one main direction for torque transmission. Asymmetric
gears have the teeth with different pressure angles on their flanks and aimed to improve a performance in one
direction. For a number of years now I have been involved in the R&D and design of involute gearing including
asymmetric tooth profiles. Outside of my own experience, I have been unsuccessful in finding pertinent references
about asymmetric gearing. In the spirit of gaining more knowledge about this very promising gearing approach, I
would appreciate any references others might have concerning actual design and use of these gears. I would also

Hi,
I spend my days designing modular buildings so this gear problem is a bit out of my realm of experience. I am looking for some help designing a gear set for an invention of mine. I know gear design basics, but this is beyond what I know. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The needed gears (to be made from plastic) are part of a kids toy that I am developing on my own time and with my own money.
For my prototype, I will need to make a 3D solid model in AutoCAD and will export it for fabrication perhaps via stereo lithography.
I need two identical gears which combine to create a beveled helical gear set. As far as I can tell, the relationship of these two gears will not permit a straight spline design.
Here are a couple of drawings (top view and front view) that will better describe what I need for this project.... (NOTE: The gears in the pics will not mesh and are only shown to describe the geometrical relationship of the two gears.

The angular dimension on the first drawing is 48 degrees.
The angular dimension on the second drawing is 12 degrees.
I found the equations for designing "Helical Gears for a given shaft angle with equal center distances", and I found equations for designing Bevel Gears. I couldn't find equations that covered a combination of the two.
I have found several programs that will help to create gear models, however none of them will handle this type of design.
So my question is how do I go about designing beveled helical gears?

If a profile shift of +0.5 increases the working pitch diameter of an external spur gear, does the same +0.5 shift increase the pitch diameter of an internal gear? Or do you use a -0.5 shift to increase the pitch diameter of an internal gear?

I am trying to reverse engineer a worm gear & I need to specify a MOB with tolerances. Our current gear description is:
.3927" AXIAL PITCH, LEFT HAND, 14 1/2° PRESSURE ANGLE, .7854" LEAD, 40 TEETH, 5" PITCH CIRCLE DIA., DOUBLE THREAD, DIAMETRAL PITCH = 8.
NOTE: USE SINGLE PITCH HOB NO. 680-5247.
(Note: Center distance on drawing is 3.068" +.005"/-.000 & throat radius is .450")
I have measured MOB on several gears with 7/32" balls & MOB only ranges from 5.372" to 5.378". This is a low speed/low accuracy gear, but I am concerned that a PD of say 5.375" +/-.003 is too tight for practical manufacturing.
I would greatly appreciate help from gear manufacturers, etc., or others that are much more knowlegeable than I.

I have a motor that has a pinion attached to it. I want to be able to buy the pinion separately but can't seem to figure out what size the pinion is. The sizing works out to .65 Module at 12 tooth. The P.D. is 7.8 mm, the O.D. is 9.15mm. This pinion does not size to american gears either. Would appreciate anyone's input.

My question is about estimating the module of an unknown gear. For example, there is a gear, but we do not know its module, pressure angle, and helix angle. We measure its base diameter with profile control device and we find its base diameter. And of course we measure its tooth lead with lead measure device. Now we know two measures of the gear. For example we have a gear M: 2,25 ALFA: 28 Degree 42 Minute 42,82 Second Z: 26 BETA: 16 Degree 5 Minute 58,17 Second TOOTH LEAD: 662,74471 BASE DIAMETER: 52,895479. But may be we are deciding a wrong module, wrong pressure angle and wrong helix angle. May be our gear has M: 2,1 ALFA: 20 degree Z: 26 BETA: 15 degree TOOTH LEAD: 662,74471 BASE DIAMETER: 52,895479. Of course outside diameter and tooth height of gears are the same above. In this case how we decide the module, because if we decide the module all other values (i.e pressure angle, helix angle etc.) can be found easily. Thanks.

I have a autocross prototype with two bike engines rear mounted. the two engines witch have output gears of 12 teeth are connected to two sprockets of 48 teeth each on the rear axle.
In this rear axle I have another sprocket of 40 teeth witch transmits the movement to the front axle where I fit a limited slip differential witch is driven also by a 40 teeth sprocket.
If I change the two 40 sprockets by smaller or bigger will I change transmission ratio or only the speed of the chain?
How can I improve the transmission movement of this prototype?
What will be the consequences of fitting bigger or smaller sprockets than the ones of 40 ?

creating a simple clamping device around a steel tube of 4.5" dia. restricted height above surface of said 4.5" dia. envisage approx.1.0" dia gear;0.160" thick,(already have substantial material of this thickness available; 12 to 15 teeth. rack to suit at approx 3" long. precision not an issue. already have laser profiling facilities.
clamping band effect is a one shot application. after proving idea works will have market quantity in region of 9,000 + per year.
