Subject: A mooch sized ego

This is my take on the Mariucci situation:

In a bi-polar GM - Head coach set up, the basic elements of a head coach would be:

1. To assemble and motivate a group of capable coaching staffs.
2. To design strategy based on the players available.
3. To motivate the players to execute the game plans based on the above overall strategy, and to achieve results at least equal to players' collective skill level.

Not sure if the 9ers assembled the most capable staffs in the past few years. All successful 'dynasty' teams have multiple of superb coaches. Just watch all the former 9er, Cowboy, Packer, or Viking staffs. I have yet to see a highly recruited coach from Mariucci regime. A CEO can only be as good as his executive team! Morningweg? hehe.

To design strategy based on the players? This is the most interesting part! Clearly on the offense, 9ers have more fire power on the pass than run. After, Owen can dominate. Is it really so bad to use pass to open up run instead of run to open up pass? A very stubborn yet unimaginative coach designing an over all strategy that does not take advantage of available personnel, no wonder some players are frustrated.

No sure a public spanking of Jerry Rice in his last game as 9er was the best way to energize and motivate highly intelligent players. Is it really necessary, after the game was 'secured', to call plays for Owen to break Jerry's record? Rice must have been a real pain the few years under Mooch, but what a way to get even, in public! With this type of nastiness, no wonder the players are playing only to their skill level and failed to lift themselves to the next level!

I am under the impression that Steve is a real hands on guy with a big ego (well covered with smile and rah rah) and a nasty side. I am not sure he can handle outstanding staffs or super stars. After years watching the 9ers under Steve, I have yet to see his team played beyond their talent level.

Look, if Walsh didn't get Garcia (remember Mooch wanted Ty Detmer?), can you imagine what kind of team and result would the past two years be?

Thanks for reading,
