Contacted at local radio station NauFM - which, together with PNG's gay and heterosexual Sydney community is sponsoring Tau's Mardi Gras float - the soft-spoken singer and dancer said he was flabbergasted by local reaction to his one-man show.

``First, I must say that I will appear as 'the Pacific Queen', not the Hiri Hanenamo; I do not wish to offend Papua New Guinea or my clan,'' he said.

``I am going as me. We cannot change the way we were created. We are created once and we cannot change it. Why does someone want to change someone? We should accept people as they are. This whole business is getting out of hand.''

Tau's music is contemporary Pacific ``pop'', with his singing and dancing the lead elements in live performances. Tau says his music is not ``gay'' - though he may be - and featuring it at the Mardi Gras would help lift the profile of Pacific music.
