Guage refers to the number of round lead balls to the pound. Hence 20 guage 20 balls per pound 12 guage 12 balls per pound etc All things being equal the 20 guage is kind of in the middle recoil wise and effectiveness wise. However recoil has as much to do with weight of powder charge, payload, and gun as it does bore diameter. The least recoiling will be the 41 guage aka 410 bore. The heaviest will be the 10 guage.Unless of course you manage to run across an 8 or even 4 guage which introduces a whole new level of pain.
