I have had a great Plains rifle in .50 for some time and absolutly love it. The rifle shoots very well with the load I use. I have only one complaint with the gun and that is the with the lock. The hammer spring is a coil-spring type, as opposed to the stronger, and in my belief better, leaf spring type. My rifle has begun to lite strike on the caps and I am not sure why. I shoot my powder guns alot and expect alot from them. A pound of powder every 2 weeks is normal for me.other than the spring issue, these guns are very close to 1830's period-correct Hawken rifles! Because I like to shoot alot, I shoot Pyrodex RS in this rifle. I can shoot 25 shots before I need to swab the bore and keep shooting. My pet load is this: 90 grains( by volume!)of pyrodex behind a .490 ball and .010 pre-lubed patch(recommend Ox-Yoke brand)This is the load I shoot and hunt with, and provides excellent accuracy to 100 yds, and maybe a little more! A big trend with round ball shooting is to use the tightest ball you can find, such as .495 in a .50, and use a thin patch. I have done this with various charge amounts and could find no differance in the gun's performance. I will stick with the load above until something better, not different comes along.hope this may be of some use, write back if any more questions, Phil Lewis, Va. Beach, Va.
