Misuse of millions alleged over housing money
THE National Housing Corporation has begun investigating alleged misuse of millions of kina from its funds by certain senior officials in concert with a senior government minister.
The Post-Courier confirmed last night with highly placed NHC officials that the probe began two weeks ago under instructions by managing director Ludwick Maliha and was expected to be completed within two weeks.
Certain highly incriminating evidence against those officials and the politician have been uncovered to date, the sources said.
Preliminary figures suggest misuse of funds totalling K4 million, they said.
Alleged political influences and interference in the use of NHC funds have been a major area of concern, the officials said.
Housing Minister John Kamb has been made aware of this investigation and has given his blessing, they said.
According to these officials, a senior auditor has been engaged to carry out the investigations, which while being wide-ranging, would target alleged financial mismanagement, the allocation of NHC houses allegedly through corrupt means and on employment contracts, as well as contracts for construction and supplies.
"The direction given for investigations is in line with the Government's stand against corruption and for honest and transparency to prevail," one official said.
"The NHC has experienced severe credibility problems in the recent past. We want to find out where all the money taken as overdraft was spent and why there have been unbudgeted expenses under an ad hoc administration.
"The recommendations would be made for appropriate authorities to action."
The top job of managing director at NHC has been the subject of controversy this year.
Incumbent Mr Maliha was removed by the Government and replaced with his deputy Monovi Amani in April, leading to a long court battle which Mr Maliha won and retained his job only last month.
