Just wondering...have you guys heard any news about the "I Am" remaster that is supposed to come out in April? That's my favorite EW&F album, and I can't wait to get a newly remastered copy with bonus tracks. What do you think the bonus tracks will be? I'm betting that it will contain...

***"Diana"---an unreleased song from these sessions that was co-produced by David Foster

***"Where Do We Go From Here (original 1978 version)---the version that appears on 'The Promise' has been slightly updated.Hopefully, for this project,Maurice will include the original 1978 version.

***"Dirty" (two demo versions)---on another forum, someone mentioned that there are several demo versions of this track, one of which appears on the Eternal Dance box set.For this remaster,it would be cool to hear all the demos of this extremely funky track.

And if there are demos of "You And I" and "In The Stone",I'd be interested in hearing those too!

Thanks to AllnAll for bringing this to our attention. This is a letter that all EWF/MW fans should read and take to heart:

From the Jan. '04 issue of Vibe magazine, "Call & Response" section, p. 25

"I am sending out a thank you with gratitude to a special fan, D. Lynn Davenport from Richmond, Va. [Mail, Nov. 2003]. She spoke out on behalf of Earth, Wind & Fire in response to a statement made in the 10th anniversary issue that Earth, Wind & Fire makes music for "mama's" generation. Here is my own retort: Whether it's during a live performance or on a CD, we give it all we have. We have been making a positive contribution to the musical arena for more than 3 decades. We continue to make recordings today and are frequently sampled by current artists all the time. We are real musicians, walking in the path of the great ones who pioneered this musical road for us to travel. Artists like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, and Art Tatum. Singers like Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Billie Holiday. These are artists who will never be forgotten. Music lives today because these artists paid their dues so we would have a better chance toward musical freedom. To make a positive contribution, there is more to creativity than just commerciality and chasing that hit. There is musical pride, and we share ours openly with you.

Maurice White (of Earth, Wind & Fire)
    Santa Monica, Calif.

Has anyone else noticed the subtle differences in the songs that came after this album? Specifically the drumming? I have been trying to note the change in style between Maurice and Fred White when he took over in 1975 and I have come to the conclusion that Maurice's style had a more funky approach, more flourishes and more raw sounding...listen to "Mighty Mighty" or "Drum Song" whereas Fred had a more straightforward groove style to his, precision and polished..he "lay" more in the background as support rather than being a noticeable driving force of a song..like the horns or the vocals.

    What do you think?

    Hey y'all,

Back in '96 EWF was gonna release the song "In the Name Of Love" from the "Avatar" album as a Japanese CD single (on the Avex Trax label), but the single was deleted. Does anyone out there know what the full tracklisting for the CD was (or would have been)? Was it released and then deleted, or never released at all? Maybe someone from Japan can help me out on this one...

    Thanks in advance,

  • Change of subject... -- Allnall, 11:53:31 08/03/03 Sun
I think a week is loooong enough to be venting on the same subject. Each of us is entitled to contribute their opinion on a subject and should be able to have an audience/forum to air those views. But I think that if we all re-read some of the comments in the previous thread some seem to be just a little bit vindictive and spiteful. We should all be glad to have "A" forum let alone (at last glance) 3 well put together boards to post our info/love for the Elements. For various reasons some people prefer to post to one as opposed to the others...that is their right...for me it sometimes comes down to which link comes up faster when I log-on...my patience is not always at a premium...but we/I can all learn from everyone and no board is more important than the other...each serves its purpose and for those who can remember far enough back...we only had the Imusic board that was, at times, frustrating and clunky, but at LEAST fellow EWF fans could communicate.

What I am interested in today is to know for all those who have posted here...have the stations in YOUR area played anything from "The Promise"? What steps, if any, have you taken to ask the stations why, or at least informed them that their is a new album out? I am in NY and have not yet heard anything (not to say they havent played...I dont listen to radio all day..but I think not) and I have sent emails to several stations informing/asking them to play the CD. Can anyone suggest other ways to get the attention of the stations which normally play old-EWF but maybe because this is an Independent label choose not to play it or need to be paid to play it?????..regardless of the fact that it is from an artist that needs no intoduction and that has a critically acclaimed CD in "The Promise" from the reviews I have read on the WEB. Can we help any or is it solely up to members of EWF and its staff/distribution to get the message out there?

"Ain't No Remedy" (from Live In Rio Japanese import)
"Soul" (from Japanese import of The Promise)
"So Lucky" (from Japanese import of The Promise)
"Whatever Happened" (from Undercover Brother soundtrack)

  • "The Promise" Japanese Import (bonus tracks) -- DavidEye, 05:48:28 07/18/03 Fri
Did everybody finally get the Japanese import version of 'The Promise'? Mine came in the mail yesterday from Amazon. It contains two bonus tracks "Soul" and "So Lucky" and these songs are GREAT!! "Soul" is incredibly funky. It reminds me of "Rock It" from 'Avatar'.Killer bass and some really funky horns (James Brown would be proud).Maurice handles the lead vocals. The other song "So Lucky" is also very good.Philip handles the lead vocals on this track. It's funky, with an intoxicating groove and catchy chorus ("So lucky my love is you").You can hear Maurice banging away on the kalimba during this infectious tune.

I've noticed that some of the other songs are different from the regular U.S. version of the CD.The vocals on "Hold Me" sounds slightly different, and some of the interludes sound slightly different as well.

In additon to the Japan 'Promise',I also got the Japan import of 'Live In Rio',which includes the bonus track "Ain't No Remedy".It's a great song too! Uptempo funky jam with vocals by Philip and somebody else (it might be Maurice,I'm not sure...it sounds like another guy). This song sounds like something from the early 80s,it wouldn't have sounded out of place on the 'Raise' album. The chorus goes...

"ain't no remedy for this life we live
ain't no remedy for the time we give
just keep your head up high
    reachin' for the sky"

I really think these three songs should have been included on the US version, and possibly "Whatever Happened" too,it would have balanced out the album since these songs are more uptempo.

There was sooo much energy, the crowd was ignited from the get-go...chanting "Maurice", "Maurice" knowing that he was supposed to show up...and Yes folks..he did!!!! Everyone went wild, screaming, jumping up and down, crying (I did I must confess) because he came out during the intro to "Be Ever Wonderful", and Robert had just finished singing "Love's Holiday" so we were not expecting Maurice...but wow he came and he sang wonderfully!!

I will just leave you with this tid-bit until tomorrow...when I can regain my strength..and yes...he did play the kalimba during "Evil"....what more can I say...it was like a spiritual experience....

  • EWF Concert on June 20...Star Plaza Theatre, Merrillville, Indiana -- BermudaGirl, 09:31:42 06/23/03 Mon
Well..I am still recoverin from the concert...but will attempt to give a review for those who have not seen the new PROMISE TOUR as yet.......
EWF,you know that the legendary intro is so dramatic that you don't want to miss it.The crowd was buzzing way before the concert started. The house was jammed packed to the roof. One of the most beautiful things that I truly loved was that there was all types of races, creed, etc.Blacks, whites, hispanic, asian, young men and women. But also, young children were in attendance and they knew all and sang EWF songs.Truly amazing!! What really amazing is that there were handicapped people who couldn't walk or people who were blind, and yet they made every effort to see the greatest band in the world perform. When EWF appeared, the crowd was at a stand still. They opened with In the Stone(my top ten EWF favorite). They performed over twenty songs, played with perfection on every song, with Philip sounding so beautiful and the band sounding so great.I have to give big time props to David Wentworth. They sounded very good, better than they ever. Verdine was magnificent as usual. He and Philip received standing ovations the entire evening, especially when Verdine went into the audience. He is the greatest bass player in the world.Ralph is so cool and a true legend too.He impressed me with his lead vocals on''All in the Way". This truly a near perfect night. The crowd was filled with and left with love. I have been to many EWF concerts and this one ranks up there among the best I ever seen.(besides their Vegas shows)...most probably others who attended can provide the list of songs... Hey Folks...as we know...THE FIRE...the greatest band on the earth and seem to be getting better.

I may be one of the last EWF fanatics to have it, but 2 weeks ago I recieved EW&F Live on Soul 1972 from a website named www.houseofnubian.com. They sell it on VHS or DVD. Be warned, they were also advertising EWF Live on Soul 1973 on a compilation called "Classic Soul Vol.5", but it's the same 1972 performance. Oh yeah by the way, it's AMAZING!!!!

  • Upcoming EW&F releases -- DavidEye, 04:29:24 06/10/03 Tue
So,did everybody pre-order the 'Promise' import CD (Japan)? It is now listed at Amazon.com for $36.49 and it will be released on June 30.It contains two bonus tracks, here is the complete tracklist...

    "All In The Way"
    "Betcha"
    "Wiggle"
    "Why?"
    "Wonderland"
"Where Do We Go From Here"
    "Freedom"
    "Hold Me"
    "Never"
    "Promise 1"
    "All About Love"
    "Soul" (bonus track)
    "Suppose You Like Me"
    "Promise 2"
    "She Waits"
    "Promise 3"
    "Let Me Love You"
    "So Lucky" (bonus track)
    "Dirty"

I also ordered the Japanese import 'Live In Rio' CD which contains one bonus track "Ain't No Remedy" ($35.49 at Amazon). While I was there,I noticed that there are several other EW&F CDs due soon...

***'September' ($24.98) due June 24.There was no tracklist, but I'm sure this is just another Greatest Hits set.

***'Avatar' ($29.75) due June 30.Sounds like this is just the 'Avatar' CD (remastered?).It is a Japanese import. Are there any bonus tracks?

***'Live In Velfarre'($29.75) due June 30.This is that mid-90s 'Live' album that was released under a different title in some countries. No word if it contains anything different from the regular CD.

***'Definitive Collection' ($14.09) German import. No tracklist available, butI think this is another compilation CD that was previously released.

So,it looks like many of the EW&F compilations are being re-released.Amazon and CD Universe don't have the tracklists yet so we don't know if there will be any bonus tracks. But I'm really excited about the Japanese version of 'The Promise'.

    ANOTHER great review...actually very nice...
One problem I had with the credits (unless I missed it)....Mr. Reggie Young (trombonist), was not listed with others listed in the credits...
Needless to say...I informed them (allmusic) of this via email.(hey, if you gonna do it...do it right!....)
*i am certain it was probably an oversight!!!!

Other than that..the review of the CD, "THE PROMISE" sounded great to me.

  • My review of 'The Promise' -- DavidEye, 06:17:46 05/27/03 Tue
First of all,I have to ask,why is this board so quiet?? There is a NEW Earth Wind and Fire CD in stores!! Where are the reviews, comments, opinions?? Y'all are disappointing me...lol...well,since everyone is too shy to post their review,I will break the ice and give my review first.I expect to see more reviews from you guys too!!

Ok,I bought the CD last Tuesday and I've been listening to it non-stop since then.I wanted to take a few days to really listen to these songs.AndI'm happy to report that I love what I've been hearing! We've waitied so long for this CD and it was definitely worth the wait. The best thing about 'The Promise' is,it is a *REAL* Earth Wind and Fire CD.I am thrilled that the guys shelved the Wyclef collaborations.I like Wyclef and Eric Benet, but in the end, *NOBODY* can produce an Earth Wind and Fire CD the way Maurice White can.He is simply a musical genuis.

Not only did Maurice produce most of the tracks,he is also back singing lead vocals on many songs. One of my main complaints with the 'Avatar' project was that Maurice wasn't featured enough, and it just didn't feel like an Earth Wind and Fire album (although it contained some strong songs). On this new CD,the interludes are back and so is the kalimba. And The Emotions are back, adding their beautiful voices to several tracks. In many ways, this CD is just like old times.

The only complaint? There aren't enough uptempo tracks.Don't get me wrong,I love the slower tracks and the relaxed,laid-back vibe of the CD is intoxicating (Quiet Storm stations are gonna love these songs!).But,it would have been cool to have maybe two or three more uptempo funk tracks.A song like "Whatever Happened" (from last year's 'Undercover Brother' soundtrack) would have been a nice addition to this album.

Here are my favorite tracks from the CD...

***"All In The Way"---their best single in years!! I simply adore this song.Catchy and inviting,it's classic EW&F.Hear it once and you'll be singing it all day long. This song feels like old times, reminiscent of past songs like "Thinkin Of You".It's so good to hear The Emotions again,as well as Maurice's kalimba.

***"Why"---lovely Maurice White ballad with alto sax by Gerald Albright.Interestingly,Fred White appears on this song, singing background vocals.

***"Wonderland"---this breezy number is destined to become a new EW&F classic!! Features gorgeous harmonies and guest vocals from Angie Stone, truly a beautiful song.

***"Where Do We Go From Here"---MY FAVORITE SONG ON THE ALBUM!! This song is magnificent!! It was originally recorded in the fall of 1978 during the sessions for the 'I Am' album.sounds as if they updated the music but kept the original 1978 vocals.Philip Bailey really shines on this masterpiece! Nice jazzy piano by Bill Meyers (who co- wote the song). This song probably would have appeared as a bonus track on the upcoming 'I Am' remaster, but I'm glad Maurice put it here instead. It will now get the full atttention it deserves and would even make a fine single.

***"Never"---in my area, this song is getting alot of airplay on one of our local jazz/Quiet Storm/R&B stations (KBLX in San Francisco) and it's easy to see why. It's a wonderful song.A cool,Latin-flavored uptempo jam with a mesmering salsa breakdown.Features Freddie Ravel on acoustic piano.Another track that would make a fine single.

***"All About Love"---another sultry slow jam, again featuring The Emotions.I love the "say you will, say you won't" part, which is from a 1979 song by The Emotions.

***"Dirty"---another song originally recorded in the fall of 1978,this song appeared as a brief interlude on the 'Eternal Dance' box set. Here, you get the full song and it is fantastic! Killer groove. How many of us would love to hear this song performed on tour?

    So,come on everybody,let's see your reviews :)
