The points you make are very interesting, but my take is that if Nyarlatothep has intervened in the past he's done it through visions and prophecies. For example, the deceptive prophecy of PG that sent Buffy to the Master and would have resulted in the Hell Mouth opening. Or Drusilla's visions when she sired Spike, or during S2 when she told Angelus how to find Acathla. Why? Because Nyarlathotep is the master of madness and visions. Drusilla is the ideal agent. But she's open to everyone. (Chaos, Bad and Good). I'm skeptical about N having appeared in the flesh before (excluding Amends), but I can't completely discount it either. Interesting to note that if I'm right, Xander foiled N in S1 by reviving Buffy, and Spike foiled N in S2 by betraying Angelus. Hmmmm...
The key will have a very important role. But for the life of me, I can't figure out what it is yet. Loved your take.
