I think that Xander sees a vision himself - perhaps he has the sight. I dont know what he sees, but I think it perhaps involves Buffy and is so terrible that the only possible option in his head is to get himself vamped. This would be enough for him to be convinced, as we've seen in Hells Bells.
So this would tie in with question one - clarity is one of the two to deceive. As pointed out in another answer - clarity is blindness.
Still not sure on what he does see though
