Date Posted: 12:22:14 09/02/01 Sun I don't give a shoot about runners. I'm obsessed with the killers. One time, though, I did get the cops do dress down some asshole who decided to spend the cab fare on a 6 pac o'beer and 'short' me. The cell phone worked with that case. I got paid & tipped. He was such a softy with the cop. It burned my ass the way he said;"It's just a few dolars and only a cab driver." Another time I fired off a round at a runners heels. One other time I even went into the projects and demanded $ from the hidden culprit's Mom. I got it! |

Date Posted: 03:27:20 09/10/01 Mon That brings up the point exactly. They will hold, handcuff and arrest someone for shoplifting a 75 cent pack of gum, yet, if you the driver are ripped off for 8 bucks, the attitude is....you're only a cabdriver..why didn't you ask for the money up front. |

Date Posted: 13:45:03 04/23/02 Tue Sometimes it's just not worth it and even if you caught the person the cops in my town would take hours to come. Most times I know where its headed usually before I get to the destination and will turn off the meter a few blocks away and give the guy a deal. He will have the cash and pay me then or not. I have driven them back to where I got them. |

Author: Alan Moore, Dallas Taxi Permit #27009 [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 11:00:07 10/18/02 Fri In Dallas, a cab driver is not permitted to chase down a runner...I did it once on my second night out two summers ago...I caught the kid, took him to his parent's apartment, and they promptly accused me of kidnapping their child and I almost got in some BIG trouble...all over a $12.40 fare on a Friday night when I could have been working...it wasted 3 hours of my time explaining to the cops that the kid was in my taxi and did not pay me. The police in Dallas will not even write a ticket to the person (failure to remit payment for services rendered, not even classified as a misdeameanor) unless the fare is over $20. The person may not be arrested unless the charges are over $500. By the time my meter could reach $500 I'd be state and a half away! And after all this, I still can't chase a fare. So I figure, unless it's completely dead business-wise, and the fare is under $20, I can do nothing. If I feel the passenger has no money, the city DOES allow me to ask for prepayment of the estimated fare. If the passenger does not wish to leave a deposit (usually $10 or $20 unless they're going far), I don't take them, they complain to the city, lie, and say they had money, and I get a complaint filed against my permit. *growls* |
