Dear Lurker,

"and that the fruits of our labors are not forfeit to the first thug who
demands them at the point of a gun."

As I said, you over estimate what are the fruits of YOUR labor. You utilize
machinery that is the product of much brain power that was not always paid
for in any contractual arrangement, but was done by men with active minds.
You are surrounded by people who were reared by persons who received no
remuneration for those uncountable hours of labor. The list is almost
endless.

Your quoting the phrase "fruits of our labors" as a justification for your
position also shows how impersonally complicated our society has become, how
distant you are from all the people who contribute to your well-being,
people whom you never see, and probably never think of. I say never think of
because of this question you posted:

Did I sign a contract or something that I have forgotten about?

You reduce complex human society to series of contracts -- a puny positivism
that bears almost no relationship to actual human interaction. The great
richness of society, passed down through generations and handed to us in the
form of conventions, traditions, rituals, habits seems not to have been
conveyed to you at all by your life experience -- a terrible indictment, not
of you, but of the impersonalness and barrenness of America in the late 20th
century.

I hope you are in a very tiny minority -- though I think that you are not.
Many, many persons are deprived, as you are. It makes me sad.

Kindest Regards
