• It was a combination of him thinking that he ought to start acting like a grown up and have a visit with her combined with Maria wanting him to take something down to that 'blessed hardworking girl' to make sure she didn't 'waste away to nothing' that drove him out of the house. He supposed he thought that four weeks was long enough that they could be talking and carrying on a reasonable adult relationship now. He meandered out of the house with the fresh pita sandwiches, brownies and small bottle of milk that Maria had sent with him. • Harvey had gone into the fenced in arena to help lacey remove the equiptment from Pablo, taking the pesoa from her along with the roller while she slipped Pablo's bridle form over his ears and let him go and have a run and a roll in the sand. The pair climbed out of the large pen and Lacey climbed up ontot he first wrung of the fence to watch the colt have a good run around and a play, chatting contently with Harvey. He'd asked her to come along to the dance organised by the regional showjumping assosiation they were all part of- as a friend of course, and Lacey had talked herself into accepting. • He finally got down to the ring and stood there dumbly for a moment with the food in hand and their backs turned. Finally, at the risk of standing there forever, he cleared his throat, but didn't say her name. • Lacey glanced over her shoulder, half expecting to see Carlos, When she saw Ryan standing there looking less than happy she stepped down off the rail and turned to face him, though remained aware of what the stallion was upto in the paddock. "Ryan... Hey..." She spoke softly, unsurely almost. As soon as she spoke his name Harvey turned and offered the guy a slight smile, turning his attention back to the horse to avoid the awkwardness. Lacey chewed at her lip a moment as she often did when she was nervous, before lifting her blue eyes back to her 'ex' "is everything okay?" She was asking on more than one level. • He was mostly dumbfounded for a minute... not seeing her everyday, remembering how beautiful she was, and loving, caring... genuine... since he wasn't faced with those things everyday, it had been easier to convince himself that she was better off without him and put aside the deep hollow ache. "Yeah... I said I'd go to the RDSJ Winter dance..." She felt guilty admitting it, she felt guilty even for agreeing to go but its not like they just broke up yesterday. It had been a month- and it had been Ryan who'd wanted the break- not her- so she was doing what Eliza suggested and living her life."Just as friends" She couldn't help but add. She smiled a little and nodded , patting the bench beside her , inviting him to sit. "Sure... I'm letting Pablo blow off some steam and have a play... he's grown a lot since we got him..." • He took in the information about the dance slowly, allowing himself to take it in stride, but it still felt like a fist was squeezing his heart. He offered her a smile. "That... should be fun." He pressed his lips together and then let his eyes wander out to the magnificent horse in the paddock. "He's really looking like he's maturing, filling out.." • She returned his smile tentatively, but didn;t reply- she wasn;t so sure it'd be fun- she didn;t much like those kind of events- and she didn't like a lot of the people, and Ryan knew it. They normally sat together and poked fun at people in playful whispers to each other, or just danced tot he nice music and ignored the rest of the room. She instead turned her attention back to something she felt more confident about, smiling a little more convincingly at Pablo "He's really come along... he's beginning to look like a real Stallion now... Look at the neck on him... and his paces are to die for. • He noted her silence on the dance thing and just nodded... he knew that she was probably having flashbacks to all the events they had attended with his parents together, just the same ones he was having. He smiled when she spoke of the horse, lighting up, he wondered how often she'd actually lit up like that in the last four weeks.... and when she drank the milk, before he could stop himself, he reached up to cup her jaw and wipe away the milk mustache with his thumb like he did everytime, pulling his hand away when he realized what he'd done. • She turned her face to his as his hand cupped her jaw, her blue eyes flickering over his as his thumb brushed her lip. She swallowed softly and dropped a gaze as he pulled his hand back, a soft, sad smile touching her lips as she glanced back up to him "Old habits die hard..." She offered in his defence. She did it to. She still went to send him a goodnight text every night before she fell asleep, and had to stop herself at the last minute when she realised, and she still hurried to finish her day at the stables for 4.30 when he'd be done with school and getting home, only to find herself with nothing to do then for the rest of the day. • He nodded a little bit at that, looked away and finally looked back at her, his teeth pinching the inside of his lip as he finally spoke. "I don't think I want these habits to die... I know... it's just going to sound selfish... and if you're not interested, I understand... but you should know that I still love you... and four weeks hasn't done much but make me love you all the more." • She watched him as he spoke, his words washing over her like a tidal wave. She'd just started coming to terms with all this and now it was up in the air again. She took his hand gently, covering it with both of hers as she fixed her eyes on their interlocking fingers, "Thats all I've wanted to hear for a month...." She murmered softly, drawing a softly breath and lifting her gaze to meet his "But I think maybe you were right the first time. " She watched him carefully, her brow furrowing gently in concern for him, her eyes full of appology. "I love you and I miss you... but I need to learn to be a whole person by myself. Without you, without my brothers protecting me. I need to know that I can be a whole person without somebody else." • He hadn't really expected her to take him back.... not truthfully, as much as his heart willed it. He had ruined her, treated her horribly, he probably deserved whatever punishment she wanted to dole out - going out with Harvey, whatever it was. He frowned, but didn't release her hand, not willing yet to let the contact break. "I didn't think that I could fix things just that easy." He pressed his lips together and sighed. • She watched him with misted eyes, her tears soon falling as he said what he had to say. She tipped her face down and let her brow furrow against the tears. She wasn;t trying to punish him or make him sorry- she was just trying to fix herself. He had broken her- and she was doing her best to fix herself back up. She lifted her gaze back to him , her lips pressed softly together in a gentle pout, watching a him a moment before she wond her arms around his neck for a hug, she needed it. She missed his embrace and the comfort it gave her. "I love you ...so much." She whispered to him, closing her eyes tight as she hugged him long and hard, burrying her face into his shoulder. • He almost melted his arms around her, feeling a distinct sense of relief and a mild sense of fulfillment for the time being. His arms wound around her back and he tugged her close to him, resting his face with eyes closed against her hair and letting out another long sigh. • She closed her eyes tightly and nodded a little, her fingers fisting gently in his jacket as she felt his arms warm and strong around her back, breathing him in and feeling almost sated for a moment as she felt like she'd found home... but they both new that this wasn't going to be easy or quick- and she highly doubted it would be simple. She pulled back and let her blue, tear-filled eyes drink in his face slowly. She leaned in and brushed a sweet, quick kiss to his lips before breaking their embrace and standing, climbing back into the arena with the horse that adored her almost as much as Spencer did. She whistled to the horse and watched him walk over, slipping his halter on and glancing back to Ryan a moment, before leading the horse out of the arena and back upto the barn.
