Farewell to Powerhour: Thoughts and reflections on Publish 16

I sit today on the eve of my very last powerhour and decided to write this.

What madness you may say, you threw it all away! You could have got that one last point! Ahh no my friends, true freedom comes from acceptance and I am free.

I am free from trying to remember what character I played last and what time his PH would begin!

I am free from Bulls, Polar Bears, White Wolves, Great Harts, Ridgebacks, Dire wolves and Hell Hounds (thanks be to all the gods!) I can now kill them all and not worry,
“Did I miss a taming opportunity there?”

I am free from boats! ( I can now delete the annoying macros, “slow forward” “back” …etc)
I suspect that the ship market will go in the tank.
Who needs a ship now that 8X8 is gone!

I am free from mining, how boring is that. Spending hours hitting rocks!

I am free from chopping trees, hitting training dummies, picking pockets and healing newbies.

I am free from spend multiple hours per day in the pursuit of “GAINS”

No longer will “server up” hold me in awe as I try to convert my timezone to the servers.

I am free from hearing that chime of someone else’s PH starting and they using it as an excuse not to play!

I am liberated! We all can go back to interaction, no longer living lives of solo quiet desperation as we seek gain advancement.

Most of all, I am free of having to spend hour upon hour performing boring repetitive tasks just so I can go to bank sit at WBB and say “hey babe, what’s your taming?”

We can travel together and gain as we go, bringing back the beauty of what makes UO great, Community!

Finally:

Two years ago, I put UO on my PC for my son. I had no intention of playing it. I was into other games. Then one Saturday, I decided to pick a shard to play and make a character. I choose the name Spad, because it is (a) the name of and airplane and (b) how I was known in the game I played. I never intended for this to hook me as it did.

No one gave me advice on how to play. As a matter of fact, no one I knew ever heard of played UO. I did the Haven tutorial and then ran through a Moongate to the streets of Brit. I did not know anything. Did not know about stratics, guilds, houses, monsters, nothing! My son and I just plain explored. I never even discovered powerhour for almost a year after I started. Hell. I choose Oceania because I liked the name. I never knew that it had a real relationship to a real geographic location. I’m glad I chose OC!

We died a lot. I can remember feeling physically afraid when I ran into Orcs. Hard to believe now! I can remember when the sound of Lich laughter caused me to sweat. I started playing just before the facet split. Pks would kill me, I did not know that they were actual players! I just though they were another monster to fight.

It was a time of innocence, a time of exploration and making connections. It was fun. It was a game and not a vocation. It was simple. Maybe Pub 16 will force us to adventure, learn, forget about wealth accumulation and enjoy the adventure, again.

We in the Nights Watch are incredibly lucky that we have this guild and we support each other in the game. Pub 16, BIG and SCARY! Nah, Bah, Fuggetaboutit! We can do this!

See Ya in the New World!
