SO CAL RAINN Event: Awareness and Hope
For Immediate Release
On August 24th, 2001, In Santa Monica's Quest Studio, will be the first annual undertaking of the So Cal RAINN Event Fundraiser. World-conscious and curious Tori Amos supporters alike will gather to help raise money for RAINN, the nation's only confidential, toll-free, twenty-four hour hotline for survivors of rape, abuse an incest (hence the R, A, and I in the acronym RAINN.) The evtn will include musical performances by: blah blah, Chris Laterzo, Carla blah, and Faith and the Muse, with possible other names to be released. Included in the festivities will be food, including gourmet pizza, appetizer platters from Bristol Farms, cake from Claim Jumper's, as well as donations from other generous local catering and restaurant supporters. Throughout the night, a silent auction of music and movie memorabilia will be present, and the night will conclude with gift bags retailing over $35 filled with merchandise from SkinMarket, Glue Magazine, amongst others.
Rather than a large entourage of celebrities organizing the event, this event has been organized and shall be maintained yearly by six ywenty-something individuals working for a cause. Says Christina Ramirez, one of the organizers, "We initially got interested because we are all fans of Tori Amos, who helped to co-found the hotline. However, since beginning to work on this endeavor, we have realized how many people's lives rape, abuse, and incest impact. We're trying to make a difference, even if it's by a few dollars. That's a few dollars more to help this worthwhile cause. " Says Audrey Nieh, also an organizer of the event, "We're hoping to garner some public attention towards this tragic state. With crime going down, it's a shame that there's still a woman out there being assaulted once every two minutes. We hope the press and celebrities alike will find this a worthwile cause to donate their time at our future events."
Statistics suggest that each and every one of us will know, do know, or will be a victim of a violent crime. Though that's a scary prospect, helping to combat and educate about sexual assault will help to break down those statistics and turn them around. With over sixty parties in thirty-four states and six countries, the So Cal RAINN event is looking to be one of the biggest. Yet, there is no competition among these groups. Says Erin Russell of SCRE, "We're not looking to brag about raising the most money, or being the best party, we're simply trying to get the message out, garner support, and of course, have everyone enjoy themselves while they support such a wonderful cause."
To help get involved, tickets can be purchased for $50.00. This figure was derived off of a few facts: The average donator gives $45.00 to RAINN, and it costs $1085.00 to run the toll-free hotline for twelve hours. Larger donations can be made by contacting the coordinators at: SoCal RAINNEvent@aol.com or by accessing them online at: http://members.aol.com/socalrainnevent/ Those who cannot attend the event are encouraged to donate separately, or enter their raffle, concluding with a grand prize of a donated Bumble and Bumble full-line gift box, retailing at over $200.00, as well as other prizes.
