Hi...i saw your posting on the 84th engineers bulletin board.

I was in A company after the 73rd relocated from phu tai to bong son. I worked at the qaurry site, in the maintenence platoon.

I was in Phu Tai from Feb 1967 to March 1968. I remember some kind of stuff going on out at the quarry site around the time of the Tet Offensive, I never knew if it was mortars or artillery or what the hell it was....stuff going right over our heads all night though. and I remember a number of times of satchel charges going off at A company compound.

I was on guard duty a lot during that tet offensive guarding the ice plant there in phu tai, and some bullets whizzing around there.

I also remember being on guard duty out at the quarry one night when we discovered a whole lot of people moving like ants up on that mountain behind the crushers..not where we were blasting rock, but where the vietnamese made their charcoal. It turned out I guess that they were ROK, Vietnamese and American troops making a major move pushing VC & NVA farther north or something...who the hell knows what was going on....we radioed in to the Officer of the guard, he checked into it and then told us to abandon our quarry site and go back to our compound.

Also remember seeing a mini-gun being fired on that mountian during the night one time after an observation plane dropped a high level flare lighting the place up like daytime....scared the crap out of us. We had no idea what a minigun was at the time. We asked some MPs the next dayw aht it was..theys aid it was the mini gum . we thought the c130 it was fired from was on fire or something..looked like burning fuel coming out the bottom of it...but that was hot lead tracers i guess. .we were working out there on 12 hour shifts at the time, crushing rock 24 hours a day.
