- Company C Action Report 31 October 1965 -- Daniel Hill, 01:53:38 05/31/09 Sun
Looking for information regarding Company C on or about 31 October 1965 where my late father was wounded in action with Charlie. Story that I received was that his company was just inland from the beach; Charlie came up from the beach, searching for a CP. His company was between the two and as a result, from what I've been told, Charlie "waltzed" through the company, annilhating 2/3 of the company. A patrol found my father 2-3 days later suffering from shock. He was subsequently transferred back to Fort Sam Houston and eventually retired in 1968. From the records that I have of his service record, it shows that he was attached to the 92nd Engineer Battalion and apparently either was transferred to the 864th. I need to know the true story of the incident for our family military history.

- 557th (LE) Co. "Earth Eaters" Support we shall -- Rusty (GOOFY) Gutendorf, 12:43:13 07/31/99 Sat
I know I've been slow getting on line, but since the 8 track tape technology folded, I didn't think computers stood a chance. Anyway, it's good to see that there are so many interested Viet Nam vet Engineers out there. I've been signing every guestbook & bullitin board I come across in hopes of finding others of the 557th (LE) Co. I was in the 2nd platoon during '69, '70 & '71. Most of the time we provided "equipment" support to the 31st Engineer Bn. To any of the other veterans, if any of this sounds familiar to the point that you may beable to provide a contact or other information, please send an e-mail. PAUL, thanks for the leads ! Hope the years have been good to you and yours. Take care, and have a great summer. Rusty

- Gilbert Roland Gonzales , served with 84th Engineers 1965-1966,wounded in Saigon,90thReplacement Center,And received Purple Heart but not recorded before Discharge on April 18,1966 in Oakland ,California. -- Gilbert Roland Gonzales, 15:27:34 03/25/09 Wed
I just brought this to the attention of my DD-214 did not when I received a Purple Heart on the field in the 90th replacement in Saigon,Viet Nam which was a Replacement Center on the Ton Son Nut when they bomb the center at 12:10 A.M. when I got hit in the latrine. The headquarters of the 90th replacements took to long to record this error in Medical or the 201 file, and incorrect evaluation at the 3rd field hospital,in Saigon that I had to write to Army records in St Louis,MO and when I got the records and Generals Orders of the men who where with me that also got twelve Purple Hearts there at the 90th Replacement Center. I did not received these orders from the records center. I received from Philadelphia,PA,Support Center after one year. I was reviewing the E-Mail in the 84th Construction in the computer. Also,I remember a Willian Sanders who served in Qui Nhon,Viet Nam the same year he arrived there and I hope I'am not wrong. My home address is P.O. Box 83822 San Diego,California,zip- 92138,today I have 19 years and seven months cleaned and I have got in touch with much distortion of my past with Post Traumatic Stress that was not address at the 3rd field hospital because my emotional illness then was very much out of control that my marriage almost turn into murder so I left voluntarily because after I got home from Viet Nam I knew I was'nt myself and this is when after eleven years of married life it was not working after Viet Nam. Today I do alot of work for Veterans with their claims, and I do alot of work for elders, and errands.
I wish all you men who served in the 84 Engineers the best of health and a good life,a friend always Gilbert Roland Gonzales served in Qui Nhon,Viet Nam 1965-1966,wounded on April 13,1966 at 90th replacement Center.Ton Son Nut,Saigon,Viet Nam, Phone Number 1-619-297-3154 give a call if you knew me.

Its been 40 years since the '68 Tet offensive !!
VC attacked the 84th compound the night of Feb 3rd.
Sp4 Daniel Pena was killed in post#3 when VC blew up his guard post and entered the compound spraying the barracks and hootches. C Co cook David Pippin was fatally wounded with a satchel charge and died a few weeks later. The cooks tent was near post#3 perimeter. I was up the hill in post#4 shitting a brick. The rumor going around was that Pena saw movement and requested permission to fire, but the OD never gave the OK. I recall the OD was a blond haired 2nd Lt from C Co.

Welcome Home Vets.
I'm on mission seeking information of my dad's service in Vietnam. He served with the 444th from 66-68 at Pleiku and An Khe. Up til now, I've found no former soldiers of the 444th, so I've been checking with other units I know were in the same areas. These would include "B" co 84th, 511th eng co., 630th eng co., and the 937th eng group. Dad's name was SPC5 Jimmy Lang and he served as an asphalt equipment operator. He started at Ft Leonard Wood and rotated back through Ft Riley. He died in 1989 from Agent Orange related lymphoma. Anybody who remembers the 444th would be of interest to me as I seek to get a fuller picture of his tours in Vietnam. Thanks.

My dad Dewey Edward Hopson, Jr. (from Tennessee) served in VN from 69-71. If you knew him and would like to get a message to him shoot me a message and I'll get it to him. I know he drove a jeep for Cpt. Ralph Brent Cordon (Cpt. Spud) not long before he came home, before that he was in supplies. Cpt. Cordon called him Hops.
I have a few pics of my dad with several unidentified soldiers and would love to get in touch with them.

- Brothers of the 84th Engineer Association -- JD Poss, 19:13:41 01/12/06 Thu
ents: Brothers of the 84th Engineer Association Viet Nam
Paul Farley, Paul Bylin, Richard McCorrison, Klim Nessmith, Aaron Brown, Dan Toomey and Darcy Zahn have carried this association. The successful continuation of the Association depends on involvement from its members. Elections will be coming in August and I urge each and every member to consider running for office and taking an active part in the Association. Most of the work has been done and only the daily business needs to be addressed. The Association belongs to all of the men of the 84th who served in Viet Nam. It is this lack of participation that disturbs me the most. I would hate to see the Association fall to the way side as so many Viet Nam Associations have in the past. Your interest and participation is vital for the growth of the Association. I realize we are all busy in our private lives. I have a son in the Navy and a daughter in medical school. My time is limited, but I believe in what our Association stands for. It is also a chance to create any change in the Association, if a new Board of Directors disagrees with the current Board of Directors. This is my personal opinion and does not reflect in any way the feelings or leadership of the current members of the Board of Directors. I am asking for each member to consider becoming involved in the Association and take an active part in its leadership. On a personnal note I have found it very rewrding when I am able to help a Viet Nam Vet find information in regarding his Army unit he served with in Viet Nam. Even if his unit is not the 84th. We are all brothers and all share a bond that will bind us together for a life time. We are not the Great Generation of our fathers but we are our Fathers Son's. We must carry on the bond of service. Please give serious thought to this request for service to your Associaton. It has been my honor to serve as the Historian for the Association. Any association grows with the input of new leadership and new ideas and new direction. I would welcome any comment regarding this posting and can be reached at jposs@dc.rr.com I ask each of you to remember the joy you had when you found the Association site and to renew that joy and become a part of the association leadership.
Thank You
JD Poss

My name is Matt Hurst, son of Randall "Steve" Hurst. My Dad was stationed over there from December of 1969 to November of 1970 over there. I am not a military man, so I do not know what some of the acronyms stand for. My Dad ran heavy equipment on the road construction crews. His old Vietnam issued button up shirt has a big A with a 5 below it.
I am trying to find out some information on that specific group and get some phone numbers from people that may have known my Dad. I want to give this to him for Christmas. If anyone has any information, please e-mail me at mwhurst@charter.net. Just want to say "Thank You" for all you did for our country. My Dad doesn't talk about his time their, unless I ask about it. I think he would come out of his shell if he had someone to talk to that experienced it with him!!

Hi ya, boys - I'm still looking for anybody from the 513th who served anytime between June 68 & June 69.
Do any of you recall an accident I had with a little girl? I believe it was somewhere near Qui Nhon, I can't remember. We were hauling asphalt and paving the road somewhere between Qui Nhon and Ahn Kay. The road was down to one lane of traffic. The right lane had fresh pavement. It came my turn to proceed up the road. About half way up a Vietnamese bus jumped the gun and headed in my direction. He pulled onto the fresh pavement and screwed it all up. The paving crew stopped the bus and waved me though. I had to run up on some bushels of grass that was on the side of the road in order to get around the bus. I didn't see the child that was squatting down in front of a bail of this grass and I ran over her with a 5 ton dump truck. Our XO saw this happen and he saved my life. I stopped the truck after I was flagged down by a GI driver who was stopped at the other end and saw me run over this girl. I flipped out and the only thing I remember is a gook cop pointing a gun at me and my XO pointing his carbine at the cop. The XO finally got the cop to drop the gun and he told me to 'un-ass the AO' I followed orders gladdly. This incident had me screwed up for a while but I put it behind me and kept on trucking - until about 10 mos ago when I went down in a crisis and found out about PTSD. Now I need to find this XO. Fat chance! No records of the time period, can't find anyone from the company who might remember, no mention of it in btn records.
I found out that I have four other major stressors left over from the war but running over this little girl has ripped my heart out, even if it was an accident.
The 513th had about 110 men in it - where the hell are you people?

- Looking for my "Big brother" Robert Bennett -- Lena Pavao FKA Len Thi Pham, 08:20:46 09/20/00 Wed
I am looking for Robert Bennett, who was with 84th Eng. Bn.in Qui Nhon during 1965, I don't remember his rank,he is not a NCO or Officer for sure, he was from Olympia, Washington, I think his wife's name was Vickie or Victoria. I was a young Vietnamese girl still in high school then, he took me and a girlfriend of mine under his wings, took us downtown and bought us our first pairs of jean, I cared for him like I would my own brother, brought him Steaks, French bread sandwiches when he was tired of messhall's foods, worried about him if he didn't stopped to said hello for a few days, he even bought a bicycle so he can ride to visit us,shared dinners with my family.
It has been 35 yrs since I saw him, I might not even regconized Bob if I ran into him, I remembered he has lots of freckles.
I would like to hear from anyone with the 84th who known Bob,I would like more info so I could locate him. Thanks

- 84th Engineers "Coat of Arms" -- CPT Frank Ginto, 23:25:00 09/10/00 Sun
Gentlemen,
I've been tasked with finding all the COMPLETE Coats of Arms for every unit in the 25ID(L). I got a packet from the US Army Institute of Heraldry, but the 84th Engineer Battalion's packet was incomplete. I got the shield (chameleon on the red and white pile), but only got a written description of the crest (Korean "Taeguk," castle, tridents, etc.) I did not however get a complete drawing. I already have the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) that goes on the uniform, but not the heraldic drawing that goes on top of the shield as the crest that completes the Coat of Arms. I need your assistance in finding that image.
Yours In Service,
CPT Frank Ginto

Hi Max!! I just read your message on here. I was not in Vietnam-my brother served in Vietnam, and my Dad was a POW in WWII-so, I am interested in peoples real life experiences
from the war-not because I care for the horror or drama, but I feel genuine concern for the effect it has had on people, such as my brother, Dad, people like yourself. My Dad and brother have never opened up about their experiences. My heart was and is heavy, as I read about your accident with the little girl, and how that still haunts you. I truely empathize with what you must feel, which, I have no clue, but, do care-even though I don't know you personally. I really feel you guys got the shaft, in so many ways, and even though I am not a war veteran, I feel a bond-a concern-for all you people went through. I am also curious to learn more-as I don't have any idea what that war was suppossed to be about (guess you guys didn't much either). I am more curious and concerned about the individual men and women who served, and what it was like there-seemed rather chaotic-guess all war is-but, that one seemed more at "random?" than the others-that is just my impression. I like to write-poetry, letters, and I am presently taking a course to write stories for children. I like to reach out and connect with others, through writing-I am very cautious and careful on this computer-I know little about the computer-I just email and write my stories-I hear weird stuff about the internet, and don't want to get involved with strangers and weirdness-there is enough already taking place-whatever!! Have you been, or are in, one on one counseling, or group counseling-concerning the issues that bother you emotionally-related to the war?? As I celebrate this Memorial Day-I will say a prayer for you and your struggle-okay?? GOD Bless-Daisy (my favorite flower is daisies-why I chose this "code" name)p.s.-I like quotes too and I recently came across this one I like very much-"Pains of Love be Sweeter Far~than all other pleasures are"
