Hi,I came to co. B in Mar 67-Mar 68 2nd Platoon. The first month I went with Sgt. Magalski many times to the ice house for ice and took a cooler with to the tank farm we were constructing. I sold cokes to the guys for ten cents during the day. We ended up finishing the main PX over by the airstrip and built a 175'x190'aircraft maintenance hanger. Also towers at the landing strip. I also had a Native American that bunked next to me that was killed on the barrier but he wasn't on patrol. Private Milton Snow. We had to start pulling guard on the equipment after someone was killed I think it was route 19 quarry. I believe we pulled guard at another quarry a few times that was closer to Hong Kong mountain too. The 1rst air cav was still there when I came but the 173rd took their place during my time there. We were attached to the 589th when I was there. We were supposed to move up by Hue but when our top brass was landing to pick out a site for us they were ambushed and we were told two were killed and it wasn't ready for construction engineers yet. Never heard their names.
I went over and came back with a wonderful guy from Waterloo Iowa by the name of Paul Bush. He was in 1rst platoon and was awarded a metal for saving the tank farm from being blown up while on perimeter guard. My barracks took 4 mortar rounds on my 21rst birthday when I had only 3 days left before leaving. I was on the perimeter pulling support guard (slept all night in a bunker between towers as it didn't affect our guard area) and spared it all. I never learned if the 4 guys remaining recovered from their wounds. Jaramello was the name of one from New Mexico. He had taken 6 months extra to go home for Christmas. Other names I remember are, Wooten, Flores, Blake, Arrington, Riley from Milwaukee Wis. Sgt. Becknel Sgt. Brown LT.Pusser, Krause, I can't recall the name of the first sgt. that made me go out on guard and spared me from being in the barracks that night but I can still see his face and his comment after getting back from guard the next morning.
We had a wonderful veterans day service here at our local school with a local Nam veteran medic as the main speaker.
I've taken enough space but I want to say as I sign off, God loves you and if you haven't put your faith in Him and accepted His free gift of salvation, don't put it off as it is the only way to have eternal life through Christ!! Thank you and God bless! Nathan Larson from Wisconsin
