Subject: A scary waste of taxpayer money in Virginia

Patty and I are definitely NOT in N.Y. any more...

The Virginia state Congress just passed two more bills banning gay marriage, domestic partnerships, civil unions and even civil and legal contracts between couples not engaged in traditional, Christian sanctioned marriages.

Apparently, the ban on gay marriage currently on the books isn't restrictive enough.

Opponents say the bill exposes the state to national ridicule by implying Virginia is riding a wave of ignorance, intolerance, hysteria and prejudice. They argue the bill not only violates the U.S. Constitution, but it will drive jobs out of state, discourage new corporations from moving in, and will hurt tourism. One delegate stated, “Virginia's painful history of mandated segregation, ongoing disenfranchisement of black voters and only recently repealed prohibition on interracial marriage have left an indelible stain on Virginia. We need not add another mark by continuing this unwarranted and mean-spirited witch hunt."

However, the sponsor of the bill comes from the rural remote, southwest corner of the state. He replied, "I am not proposing to condemn anyone. My action is merely a vote for my district. You have to understand where I’m coming from; My constituents simple people who don’t understand those concepts you've espoused.”

How's THAT for a back-handed compliment? Basically, he's saying 'I represent redneck bigots who don't see anything wrong with discrimination and who aren't smart enough to understand what you more intelligent people do."

Should these people really get paid large salaries to sit around sounding this stupid instead of discussing things of relevance and importance????

Wow, it's hard to believe this could happen in a civilised country in this day and age. Do these people really believe this is the biggest threat to their existance? It's probably safe to say that in his corner of the state nothing much would change no matter what the law stated. Why, then, get your knickers in a twist about what the ungodly masses living in the cities choose to do with their constitutionally granted free will. It seems we are unable to grant people freedom of sex, as it were. Oy gevalt!
