Keith
I'm a gold prospector. But I use pans, shovels, picks,High Banker,2" inch dredge to get to the gold.
A suggestion or two
If your detector will detect small lead shot it will fine gold.Where the lead settles out in the creek ,dig in get you a sample of the dirt and pan it out to see if theres any fine gold.If there is exposed bedrock run your detector over all the cracks.Gold is heavy its 19 times heavier than lead it will go to the bottom till it hits bedrock or a clay layer or hard pack gravel.
Old hardrock mines I would work there tailing piles and waste rock from the shaft.I would not go in a mine shaft without a partner. One man in one man out ! I've been in a lot of mine shafts they can be really bad.
Heres a list of some of the mines and creeks in union county if you need any help let me know ......Little John_SC

MINES:
Bogan Mine - was a lode gold mine.

Mud (Harman) Mine - contained gold and copper.

Nott Mine - was very productive in 1844 and was reworked in 1932 and for several years afterward.

Ophir (Thompson, Fair Forest) Mine - had a total production between 1844 - 1904, of over $100,000.

West Mine - it was the deepest mine at 115 feet in state in 1844. The mine was a lode mine, but the upper levels contains placer gold.

SUGGESTED PROSPECTING AREAS:
Fair Forest Creek - contains placer gold.
