We asked you what is the origin of the word "LEGO," namesake of perhaps the most famous line of building blocks ever manufactured. Founded in 1932 by Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen, the LEGO Company got its name from a combination of two Danish words, "LEg" and "GOdt," which mean "play well." While this name referred directly to the selection of wooden toys that Christiansen and his fellow carpenters created, the LEGO company also started out manufacturing ironing boards and stepladders to supplement their product line. The Latin translation of LEGO to mean "I study" or "I put together" was merely a startling foreshadowing of the adaptable plastic bricks the company would manufacture from the mid-1950s onward.
