THE NIGHTMARE

Last night, I had a dream of fear
writhing in sheets thinking the monster was near.
I could feel my breath halt in my heart.
I was trapped in dream, in night's cruel art.

Murderous images flooded my beings core
Blood spilling from clouds, the moon covered with gore.
Didn't know where to run, or how to retrieve
my wakeful self and this scene leave.

Firebreathing dragons flew off of a fun house ride
And skeletal merry-go-round horses whinnyed in pride.
Trees melted into the ground and arose as headstones.
Blood ran ankle-deep and the wind replaced by moans.

My legs started kicking in my safe Serta bed
they knew I had to escape this dream where I was led.
Knife-wielding shadows rose to pull me down
Into their hellish and dank world underground.

Night's hours were drifting ever so swift
My eyes started twitching, and the curse began to lift.
Bright yellow sunshine, through my window did filter.
I felt all shaken and somewhat off kilter.

Who knows what I've felt in this nightmarish land?
No one believes you, and refuses their help at hand.
I awake every morning with night terrors still fresh
All because every night I dream only of death.
